New Dean Honored

Ward has been selected as the sole recipient of the Governor's Award of Excellence in Law Enforcement Training in the category of lifetime achievement, presented by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards board. Ward will receive the award at a reception in conjunction with a board meeting Sept. 8 in Urbana.

"The lifetime achievement award is given to recognize an individual who has contributed to public law enforcement and training over an extended period of time, achieved demonstrable results, maintained highly creative efforts, and displayed exemplary service and leadership skills," said Thomas J. Jurkanin, the board's executive director.

"Those selected for the lifetime achievement award have a reputation as innovators and leaders in law enforcement at the local, regional and state levels."

Ward, who began his career as a New York City patrol officer, was previously executive director of the University of Illinois at Chicago's Office of International Criminal Justice and is an authority on international and domestic terrorism.

It's Time to Tailgate

Theresa Bledsoe, director of alumni relations, invites alumni and university friends and supporters to bring a picnic basket to the alumni tent, which will be located in the parking lot on the west side of Bowers Stadium.

"We want everyone to participate in the food, friendship and family fun, and we'll also have door prizes," said Bledsoe.

Additional tailgate parties are planned for Oct. 9 (5-7 p.m.), Oct. 16 (noon-2 p.m.), Nov. 6 (noon-2 p.m.) and Nov. 13 (9-11 a.m.).

In addition to the Thursday evening season opener, the Oct. 9 game is on Parents' Weekend, Oct. 16 is homecoming, against traditional rival Stephen F. Austin State, Nov. 6 is letter association day, and the Nov. 13 game will be on regional television.

Alvin Reception Honors SHSU Alum

Hayley was named in March to the Texas State University System Board of Regents, which governs Sam Houston State and eight other university entities.

Hayley, who graduated from SHSU in 1959, has had a distinguished career in business, as a chamber of commerce executive, and in community service. He is president and chief executive officer of the Texas City-LaMarque Chamber of Commerce.

The reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center on the Alvin Community College Campus. Allbright also earned degrees from SHSU, a bachelor's in 1967 and master's in 1969.

A native of Olney, Hayley has held his present position since 1987 and also serves as vice chairman of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives. He was previously employed by Guaranty Federal Savings & Loan in Galveston for 25 years and served as senior vice president. He served as a board trustee of the LaMarque school district for 24 years and president of the board for three years.

Elderhostel Offers Commuter Rate

The event directed by the SHSU continuing education program is scheduled for Oct. 31-Nov. 5. A special rate of $175 has been set for commuters. The cost for participants staying in the university hotel is $385.

Activities include a visit to King's Candy in Huntsville, cooking and other demonstrations at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, a visit to the world's tallest statue of an American hero, travel to the George Bush Presidential library, Washington-on-the-Brazos, the Antique Rose Emporium, and Fernland, three restored cabins from the late 1800s.

Also, criminal justice lectures on capital punishment, the prison system's Operation kick-it, and tours of the Prison Museum and Walls Unit.

Ceramics Exhibit Opens

New art department faculty member Matt Wilt will exhibit his ceramics work at Sam Houston State University's Gaddis Geeslin Gallery in the gallery's first of 11 exhibitions scheduled for the upcoming academic year.

Wilt's slipcast, reduction-cooled stoneware pieces combine familiar industrial forms to create sculptural vessels with weathered surfaces. The exhibition opens Tuesday (Aug. 31) with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 2).

Additional fall semester Geeslin Gallery events include paintings by David Hewitt and Michael R. Collins (Sept. 20-Oct. 8), Mark Abrahamson photographs and Maggie Taylor digital images (Oct. 18-Nov. 5), sculpture by Nancy Pfeifer (Nov. 8-Nov. 27), and Graduating Seniors Exhibition (Dec. 3-Dec. 11).

Spring semester events include the 40th Annual Art Faculty Exhibition (Jan. 18-Feb. 4), sculpture and paintings by Nicholas Wood, Randall T. Reid and Bradley R. Smith (Feb. 7-25), paintings by Neal Wilson (March 6-31), Juried Student Exhibition (April 3-21), and Graduating Seniors Exhibition (April 28-May 6).
