Bexleys Donate to Banking Endowment

When Sam Houston State University administrators convinced James B. "Jim" Bexley to accept appointment to the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking in the College of Business Administration, little did they know that they were getting a benefactor as well as experienced banking practitioner.

Bexley was named to the position in September 1997 and has been busy working with Texas bankers and raising the stature of Sam Houston State and the College of Business Administration in the banking world. Recently he and his wife, Elsie, contributed $50,000 to the endowment fund that supports the program.

"We're so happy to be here doing this work, and so proud of this university and this business school, that we wanted to make this gift," said Bexley. Attending Bexley's presentation were Robert Hutson, a 1965 Sam Houston State graduate who serves as donor representative for the chair, B. K. Marks, Sam Houston State president, R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration, and Gary Bouse, executive director of University Advancement.

Before coming to Sam Houston State, Bexley served as president and chief executive officer of Cardinal Bancorp, Inc. and First American National Bank of Pennsylvania. Prior to that he served as president of the largest bank consulting firm in the nation, Banking Consultants of America.

Bexley's academic background includes more than 20 years as a faculty member of the Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University, along with a number of adjunct positions at the University of Texas Pan American, Houston Community College and the University of Houston (Downtown).

He is the author of four professional books and many business and professional articles, and is a frequent lecturer for banking and financial organizations throughout the United States.

In addition to his work in the banking community, Bexley has taught and worked with Sam Houston State students interested in entering the banking profession.

'The World Goes 'Round'

The New York Times called the revue "a handsome, tasteful, snazzily staged outpouring of song and dance" that features songs from such recent Broadway hits as "Chicago" and "Cabaret."

The show moves from the crooning idolatry of "Sara Lee" to one woman's confession of joyous infidelity in "Arthur in the Afternoon" to the cool moves of "All That Jazz" and romance on roller skates in "The Rink." It continues with stirring renditions of "Marry Me," from "Woman of the Year," "Cabaret," and ends with "New York, New York."

Directed and choreographed by Jonathan Charles, "The World Goes 'Round" has a cast of 10--Ben Cole, Rhonda Curfman, Tyler Jones, Stacey Hannon, Brent McBeth, Leanne Hill, Patrick Pearson, Sarah Lilley, Chris Zelko, and Jalynn Steele.

Senior theatre major Veronica Parrish is the stage manager, while LouAnn Miles, executive secretary for SHSU Career Services, is the musical director. The set was designed by junior theatre major Sandy Gonzalez. Thomas F. Soare formulated the lighting design, and costumes were created by SHSU junior Will Isbel.

Diverse Populations Conference Sept. 25

The Sept. 25 conference is scheduled to begin with registration from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the Teacher Education Center and end at 3 p.m. Registration is $25 through Monday, or $20 per person for groups of four or more teachers, students, or SHSU alumni. Late and on-site registration is $35.

In addition to a number of sessions taught by practitioners, special guest presenters will include Mary Helen Berlanga, a Corpus Christi lawyer, Joe Bernal, former member of the Texas Senate, and Joe Hayes, a nationally-known teller of tales from the Hispanic, Native American and Anglo cultures.

Presentations are scheduled on Assessment, English as a Second Language, Southwest Cultures in Our Communities, Technology Today, Programs That Work, Literacy in the Disciplines, Professionalism, Arts in Our Classroom, and Curriculum.

Sam Houston State University faculty and staff members who will make presentations include Jeannine Hirtle, Mary Berry, Ann Reynolds, Marsha Harmon, Cindy Gratz, Mary Ann Nolterick and Astrid Brandt.

Golden Key Chapter Wins Award

The Honorable Mention Key Chapter Award honors chapters that have excelled in five major areas: communication, publicity, meeting management, chapter activities and leadership, as well as participation in regional and international programs.

Delegates from the SHSU chapter accepted the award at the convention's awards luncheon in front of 1,250 delegates from throughout the world. Nancy Brown, chapter president, and Nam Nguyen, graduate adviser, accepted the award from Golden Key board member Carl Patton (see below).

Brown said that the award is significant because only about 40 of the organization's 285 chapters throughout the world receive Key Chapter or Honorable Mention awards.

Golden Key is a non-profit, international academic honors organization which provides academic recognition, leadership opportunities, community service, career networking and scholarships. The society has chapters in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Australia, Canada, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Membership in the society is offered only to the top 15 percent of juniors and seniors in all fields of study. William B. Green, who chairs economics and international business, serves as adviser to the SHSU chapter.

Souryal to Speak on Indonesian Experience

Souryal's presentation, entitled "Don't Know Much About Indonesia: One Professor's Intriguing Experience," is scheduled for 12 noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Kerper Courtroom of the Beto Criminal Justice Center.

Souryal's assignment as representative to the High Commissioner for Human Rights began in February 1999 when he was appointed to implement mandates specified in an agreement between the Office of the High Commissioner and the government of Indonesia. He returned to resume teaching duties in the College of Criminal Justice prior to the beginning of the fall semester.

Writing Program Events

Breen (Department of Language, Literacy, and Special Populations) will speak from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Room 116 of the Academic Enrichment Center in the Newton Gresham Library. His topic is "My Students Don't Want to Read This Great Book...Strategies for Getting Students to Open the Text."

Stork (Department of Health and Kinesiology) will speak from 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the same location. His topic is "Rubrics: An Alternative Form of Assessment."
