Enrollment Up Slightly

Sam Houston State University has seven more students this fall than last fall, according to figures released Wednesday. Enrollment for the 1999 fall semester is 12,215.

"After last fall's decrease we are happy to show an increase this year," said B. K. Marks, Sam Houston president. "We are working hard to improve the quality of Sam Houston State University's academic product and educational experience and we believe students are responding."

The 1998 final fall semester enrollment of 12,208 was 501 students below the fall of 1997, a decrease attributed at least partially to tightening of academic standards relating to conditional admission at SHSU.

Stephen F. Austin State University reported that 1999 fall enrollment there was down 1.76 percent, or 213 students, for a total of 11,919. Figures were not available for Southwest Texas State University or Lamar University, but an official at SWT said they expected a slight increase and one at Lamar said their enrollment would be "basically flat."
