Marjorie Boehme Establishes Scholarships
Sam Houston State University art and history graduate students will benefit from the lifelong interests of two people who earned undergraduate degrees in another state, and came to Huntsville 10 years ago. Mrs. Marjorie L. Boehme, with daughter Kathryn Bielinski and son George Boehme, recently established the William N. Boehme Endowment Fund in memory of her late husband, to provide scholarships for graduate students in history. Mrs. Boehme also established the Marjorie Leverton Boehme Scholarship for Graduate Art Students, providing annual scholarships for students majoring in art or fine arts. Mrs. Boehme and her husband were both graduates of the University of Oklahoma. She majored in art, and he was an architectural engineer who worked in construction. They lived in Dallas and Houston and moved to Elkins Lake after his retirement in 1989. He began studies toward a graduate degree in history at Sam Houston State, earning his master of arts degree in history in 1994 and maintaining an active interest in history until his death in May, 1998. Mrs. Boehme said she established the art scholarship because of her interest in art and because she was impressed with the quality of the SHSU art department. "Scholarships such as the ones provided by Mrs. Boehme are extremely important in SHSU's emphasis on the recruitment and retention of quality students at all levels and in all disciplines," said Bruni Kline, assistant director of university advancement. "We are most thankful for her generosity." - END - Media Contact: Frank Krystyniak |
