Bridges Wins Regional Award

Dixie Bridges, a Registrar's Office assistant at Sam Houston State University, has been presented the Southeast Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Offices Staff Excellence Award for 1999.

The association selects one registrar office employee from all two and four year public and private institutions of higher education in its area, said Robert Dunning, SHSU registrar.

"Every office that provides 'service to the public' needs an employee like Dixie Bridges," said Dunning. "She is a dedicated staff member who not only fulfills her responsibilities efficiently, but represents the university in a polite and friendly manner."

Bridges, who has worked in the SHSU Registrar's Office for 10 years, processes transcript requests and degree applications, among other general office procedures. But Teresa Thrasher, assistant registrar, said that she goes beyond expectations to help solve problems.

"She is one of the people we go to when we need to brainstorm problems that may arise in implementing something new," said Thrasher. "She's good at not only projecting the problems, but offering solutions."

Other employees benefit from her helpfulness as well, said Thrasher.

"With all of our technology today this is a very valuable asset," said Thrasher. "She offers solutions to make things run more smoothly and is always coming up with ideas for programs that will make all of our jobs easier.'

Kathy Hudson, a registrar associate, calls Bridges a "remarkable person."

"Dixie has a vast store of knowledge concerning Sam Houston and its functions and can usually direct the individual she is helping right to the person or location they need," said Hudson. "Many times it is not even necessary for her to call or send them elsewhere because she already has the answer."

"If she can find out the information for them without sending them to another department she will," added Thrasher. "Her kindness and excellent attitude have to be her greatest asset."

Bridges was presented an engraved plaque and certificate of recognition at the Southeast Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Offices spring conference in Galveston. Four members of the SHSU Registrar's Office also attended.

Bridges is married to Keith Bridges, former planner/estimator in the Physical Plant department. They have a daughter and a grandson.
