SHSU homecoming offers something for everyone

Sam Houston State University students, alumni and fans alike soon will be coming together for the university's annual Homecoming festivities.

SHSU's 1999 Homecoming celebration should feature something for everyone - everything from alumni activities and student festivities to parades and football games.

Homecoming events include:

Monday

7 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Elections for Homecoming King and Queen will be held in all campus computer labs.

11:50 a.m. -SHSU Homecoming 1999 kicks off with a rally in the Lowman Student Center's mall area.

Tuesday

7 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Elections for Homecoming King and Queen will be held in all campus computer labs.

10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. - An organizations fair is scheduled in the LSC mall area.

Wednesday

7 p.m. - Ladykat Volleyball takes on Stephen F. Austin in Johnson Coliseum.

Thursday

7 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Homecoming run-off elections will be held in campus computer labs.

8 p.m. - Homecoming parade

9 p.m. to midnight - Sam Jam is set for the commuter parking lot across the street from Johnson Coliseum. Sam Jam will feature a carnival, Kat Kall and bonfire and fireworks display.

Friday

11 a.m. - Members of the Class of 1949 will be inducted into the Golden Circle Club, an organization recognizing students 50 years after they graduate. The Golden Circle reunion is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with registration in the LSC lobby.

Noon - A luncheon for the the new Golden Circle Club members is set in the LSC ballroom, with tickets at $20 per person.

5:30 to 7 p.m. - A journalism reception is scheduled at the Sam Houston Inn. For more information, call the Journalism Office at (409) 294-1497.

6:30 p.m. - Five SHSU graduates will be recognized as "Distinguished Alumni," one of the highest awards given by the university. The event, which includes a dinner, awards ceremony, reception and silent auction, will be held in the LSC ballroom, with tickets at $25 per person.

Former students recognized as "Distinguished Alumni," include Dr. W.C. "Bill" Daniels, Class of 1961; Patty Sue Davis, Class of 1956 and 1959; Don Gilbert, Class of 1974; Sonny Sikes, Class of 1955 and 1957; and Brig. Gen. Tommy Stone, Class of 1956.

7 to 9 p.m. - Campus Crusade for Christ is having a reunion for family and friends in Room 304 of the LSC. For more information, call Charles Ezell at (210) 496-1769, or Floyd Reese at (281) 362-9957.

10:45 p.m. - Homecoming Hoopla, a student celebration, is scheduled in Johnson Coliseum.

Saturday

8:30 a.m. - An alumni coffee and Homecoming registration is scheduled in Austin Hall.

10 to 11 a.m. - Agriculture alumni are set to gather for a reception and coffee in Room 325 of the Thomason Building.

10 a.m. to noon - Alpha Chi Omega Sorority is inviting alumni to stop by for an open house and social gathering. For more information, call the Alpha Chi Omega house at (409) 294-3109.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Delta Tau Delta Fraternity is having a barbecue for parents and alumni at the Joe M. MacKenzie Delta Tau Delta House. For more information, call Miles Kenny at (409) 436-0137.

11:30 a.m. - The Letterman Association Hall of Honor Luncheon is scheduled in the LSC ballroom, with tickets at $20 per person.

Noon - An alumni tailgate party is scheduled in the Bowers Stadium parking lot.

Noon - Alpha Tau Omegas and Little Sisters and spouses are invited to meet in the north end of the Bowers Stadium parking lot for a tailgate party. Following the football game, the group will gather at Casa Tomas. For more information, call Robert "Spock" Hurst at (713) 308-1818.

Noon - A political science banquet is scheduled in the LSC's Huntsville Room, with tickets at $25 per person. For more information, call Edwin Davis at (409) 294-1462.

Noon to 2 p.m. - The College of Business Administration will tailgate with other organization at Bowers Stadium. Beginning at 1:30 p.m., COBA will have a reception in the Bearkat Lounge at the Field House for the duration of the football game.

Noon - The SHSU ROTC Department will have a Homecoming cookout at Lake Oolooteka, adjacent to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. To attend, call Michael Pecina or Peggy Kindt at (409) 294-1298.

2 p.m. - The SHSU Bearkats take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in a football game scheduled in Bowers Stadium.

Following the game - Sigma Chi Fraternity will have a barbecue at the fraternity house on Highway 980, as well as announce their 1999-2000 sweetheart. For more information, call (409) 294-1432.

5:30 p.m. - SHSU Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences is having its annual barbecue at J.D. Long's home at 3352 Winter Way.

7 p.m. - Ladykat Volleyball faces Lamar University in Johnson Coliseum.
