SHSU Parents' Weekend begins tonight

By Michelle C. Lyons/The Huntsville Item

The faces wandering around Sam Houston State University this weekend may be a little older than the ones we're accustomed to seeing - it's SHSU's annual Parents' Weekend, and thousands of moms and dads are expected to pay a visit to the campus.

Frank Parker, assistant dean of student life, said between 10,000 and 13,000 parents are expected to arrive for the weekend's activities, including a barbecue and the highlight of the weekend, a football game pitting the SHSU Bearkats against Jacksonville State University at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The theme of this year's Parents' Weekend is "Wild Wild West," and the weekend will kick off with a leadership reception at 7 p.m. tonight in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.

Student leaders will be on hand to introduce themselves and everyone is invited to attend.

The activities will continue on Saturday with Parents' Weekend registration from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the LSC Lobby.

Registration packets will include barbecue and football game tickets and a map of the campus, and there also will be SHSU T-shirts, cups, Christmas ornaments and other novelties available. Proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit the Parents' Association Scholarship Fund.

The Parents' Association Annual Meeting is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon in the LSC Theater. SHSU administrators and Parents' Association officers will be on hand, and the Parents' Association will present four students with $1,000 scholarships.

A number of organizations will be having presentations and tours throughout the day.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., parents are invited to visit the Barnes & Noble University Bookstore on the second floor of the LSC, or stop by the LSC lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for caricatures.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum grounds will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., while from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be kitchen demonstrations given by costumed museum staff.

The Gaddis Geeslin Art Gallery will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., and the SHSU Chorale and Concert Choir will present a program from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium.

The Residence Hall Association will have a casino set up in the LSC Ballroom from 2 to 4:30 p.m., while a Bearkat Fashion Revue sponsored by the SHSU Fashion Merchandising Club takes place from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium.

The Panhellenic Council will sponsor new member presentations from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Auditorium, followed by a Texas-style barbecue from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Throughout the barbecue, there will be performances by the Orange Pride Dance Team, SHSU Band, SHSU Cheerleaders and Sammy & Samantha Bearkat.

The football game follows at 7 p.m. in Bowers Stadium. Parker adds that the Parents' Weekend football game is one of the season's most-attended football games, second only to Homecoming.

Activities on Sunday will include a breakfast at Cafe Belvin from 8 to 10 a.m., followed by an interdenominational worship from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in the Old Main Pit near Austin Hall.

Sam Houston Memorial Museum tours will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
