Kelley, Brown Honored
By Ag Groups

Two Sam Houston State University agriculture professors, one who is considered early in his career, and another retired, have been honored at the 45th annual conference of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA).

Stanley F. Kelley, an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and recipient of the university's 1997 Excellence in Teaching Award, received the American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARR) Outstanding Teacher Award.

While NACTA includes all colleges and universities which teach agriculture, AASCARR membership is limited to non-land grant colleges and universities. Kelley will also be honored at the AASCARR national meeting in October, and will present an address to that group on his teaching philosophies.

Murray A. Brown, former professor and head of the Agriculture Department at SHSU, who retired in 1995, was presented NACTA's distinguished service award, after serving as the organization's secretary since 1972 and secretary-treasurer since 1973. He was also NACTA president in 1969-70.

Brown, who came to Sam Houston State in 1965, also served four terms as city councilman in Huntsville, is past president of the Huntsville Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and serves as assistant state coordinator for the AARP "55-Alive" driving program.

Kelley has taught animal science courses and advised student groups since coming to SHSU after completing his doctorate at Texas A&M University in 1994. He also earned bachelor's and master's degrees at A&M, and continues to be active in his family's south central Texas ranching operation.

Kelley teaches animal nutrition, beef cattle production, anatomy and physiology, livestock selection and evaluation, animal reproduction, meat processing technology, swine management, selection and evaluation of meats, and advanced livestock management.

In addition, he is coach for the SHSU Livestock Judging Team and adviser to the SHSU Beef Cattle Show Team and Block and Bridle Club.

Kelley has been elected to both Who's Who Among American Men and Who's Who Among University Professors. In addition to his teaching and group advising, he assists with financial management and budgeting for the university farm, is active in buying and selling university livestock, and organizes and hosts seminars and short courses for community livestock producers and SHSU students on current and economical management practices.

He has also been involved in a number of research activities, served as a livestock judge throughout the state, presented programs and talks on various topics concerning beef cattle production, written articles for industry publications, and participates in several regional and national professional groups.
