Plog Returns to Teach, Perform

A world renowned-trumpet player and old friend of Fisher Tull returns to the Sam Houston State University campus for performances and workshops Sunday and Monday in connection with a Houston recording session featuring Tull's works.

Anthony Plog is currently professor of music at the Staatsliche Hochschule for Musik Freiburg in Freiburg, Germany. Sunday afternoon from 3-5 p.m. Plog will address the many facets of professional performance and will work with students from the SHSU music department in a master class format.

At 7:30 p.m. Monday Plog will perform in concert with music faculty members Charlotte Tull and Randal Adams. Both events are scheduled for the music Recital Hall at 17th and Ave. J.

The first part of Monday evening's program will include traditional literature for trumpet and piano plus Plog's entertaining composition "Animal Ditties," with Adams as narrator. The last half of the performance will be devoted to compositions of Tull, distinguished professor of music at SHSU until his death in 1994.

Plog's return to SHSU is the result of an on-going recording project by Friends of Fisher Tull. Most of the project was completed in January, but Plog's schedule prevented his participating at that time.

"Mickey and Anthony were friends for many years and when plans were being finalized for the compact disc of Mickey's chamber music with piano, the number one choice for performance of the 'Sonata for Trumpet and Piano' was Anthony Plog," said Charlotte Tull.

"We are very fortunate to have him on the Sam Houston campus to teach and perform in addition to his contribution to the recording project."

As a trumpet soloist, Plog has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia, and has numerous recordings to his credit. He has also performed as principal trumpet with a number of orchestras, including the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

As a composer, his works have been performed in over 30 countries. Recent commissions include the Malmo Symphony in Sweden and the Summit Brass in the United States.
