Soccer Team Wins State Championship!
By Steve Reames
Department of Math and Computer Science
This last weekend the men's soccer team distinguished Sam Houston State
University by winning the university division of the state intramural
soccer tournament held at the University of Texas-Arlington in
Arlington, Texas. The win qualifies the team to attend the national
finals to be held in either Atlanta, Georgia or Phoenix, Arizona.
A 4-1 win over The University of San Antonio and a 2-2 tie with the
University of Houston set up the SHSU soccer Kats for Sunday's final
against the tournament sweepers, University of Texas Brownsville. A 2-1
win brought the bleachers ablaze (the women's soccer team, some alumni,
and parents were cheering them on).
The team is a wonderful mixture of dedicated students from several
countries including Liberia, Sweden, Mexico, and San Salvador to name a
few. Their observable dedication to the sport and to the school, by
this adviser, has been outstanding. All players have expressed to me to
extend their gratitude to the team's loyal supporters. The annual
raffle, soccer camp for kids, and other fund raising assist in the
minimal $1500 budget allowed for this team. I think it is about time we
get behind them.
Again, team, a job well done! Congratulations!
Additional note: The 1999 State Champions soccer team will play against the alumni on Saturday (Nov. 13) at Pritchett Field at 7 p.m. Come out and enjoy! For more info call Joel Diaz at 409.295.5304.
