Spring Enrollment Down Slightly

Enrollment for the 1999 Spring Semester at Sam Houston State University is 11,217, down by 182 students, or 1.6 percent from the 1998 Spring Semester.

Sam Houston State University officials nevertheless saw some positives.

Each spring there is a decrease from fall enrollment. Last spring's decrease was 10.3 percent. This spring's was only 8 percent.

Also, last fall there was a decrease of 504 students from the previous fall, so some of the loss was made up by losing only 182 students this spring.

Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston president, said he believes SHSU is already benefiting from tightened admission standards to eliminate the large number of conditional admissions and from overall retention and recruitment efforts.

"I am confident that these efforts are already beginning to pay off," he said, "and will do so to an even greater degree in the future.

"Some activities relate to specific areas, such as increasing availability of financial aid and improving admissions procedures," he said. "But everyone on campus, from faculty, staff, to present students, and even our friends in the Huntsville community, can help make this a place where students want to live and study."
