SHSU Gets Bonus Aid

Thanks to some extra effort by student financial aid staffers and an aid program called the Texas Tuition Assistance Grant Program, Sam Houston State University students who qualify could begin receiving additional aid this semester.

The SHSU student financial aid office has been notified that applications they submitted to the state program resulted in an additional $128,344 allotment to Sam Houston State. SHSU received an original allocation of $104,558, but extra effort by financial aid officer Sharon Morrison and the financial aid staff resulted in the increase.

Morrison encourages SHSU students who may be eligible for the grants to contact her immediately. Here are the eligiblility requirements:

  • Must be a Texas resident;
  • Must be a full-time student;
  • Must be from low or middle income family;
  • Must have graduated from high school in the past two years;
  • Must have a high school grade point average equal to or greater than 80 on a scale of 100;
  • Must have already applied for some financial aid in order to qualify and for the processing to be completed on time, and must have what the financial aid office calls "unmet needs."

An attractive feature of the program is that recipients can remain eligible for continuing awards if they make progress toward a degree, maintain full-time academic status, and maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

Morrison said that students who qualify should receive funds by approximately March 1. Students who qualify should contact her at 409-294-1776.
