Sports Update For Week Of Oct. 1
FOOTBALL
Sam Houston State travels to Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala., to open Southland Football
League play for the 2000 season. The Bearkats were open last week, having completed their 2000
pre-Southland Football League schedule with a 3-1 record, the best start since 1994 for Sam Houston
State.
Traditionally, an open date has been a good omen for the Sam Houston State football team. Since
moving up to the NCAA Division I-AA level in 1986, the Bearkats have won eight of their 12 games
following an open date.
A member of the Southland Football League since 1987, Sam Houston State has finished among the
league's top four teams eight of its 13 SFL seasons. The Bearkats, however, have not fared well in
conference openers. Sam Houston State is 3-9-1 in SFL league openers. Those three SFL opening
victories were last year in 1999 (51-17 over Jacksonville State in Huntsville), 1996 (14-10 over
Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches), and 1991 (27-15 over Northeast Louisiana in
Huntsville.
The Bearkats tied Nicholls State 19-19 in Thibodaux in their 1992 SFL opener.
The Sam Houston State defense ranks atop the Southland Football League in four statistical categories and stands
second nationally in NCAA Division I-AA pass defense. SHSU leads the SFL in pass defense (85.3 yards per game),
opponents fumbles recovered (7), scoring defense (13 points per game), and total defense (237.8 yards per game). The
Bearkats are 14th in NCAA Division I-AA total defense.
Sam Houston State and Jacksonville State are meeting on the football field for the sixth time in their histories. The
Gamecocks lead the series, three victories to two. Sam Houston State won the first meeting 17-10 in Jacksonville in 1994.
The Gamecocks won the next three meetings in 1995, 1997, and 1998. The Bearkats won 51-17 in Huntsville last season.
Senior quarterback CHRIS CHALOUPKA passed for 324 yards and five touchdowns to lead Sam Houston State to a
51-17 Parents' Weekend victory over Jacksonville State in the Southland Football League opener for both teams on Oct. 9,
1999, in Huntsville. Chaloupka was named SFL "Offensive Player of the Week" following the victory. Wide receiver MATT
DOMINGUEZ was the quarterback's top target, catching nine passes for 113 yards including touchdown passes of 10 and
nine yards. Senior LARRY NIXON also caught two touchdown passes and JERMAINE HENDERSON caught one.
VOLLEYBALL
Sam Houston State dropped two Southland Conference matches, falling to Stephen F. Austin State on Friday and
Texas-Arlington on Saturday, both in three games. The Bearkats will play host to Nicholls State Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at
Johnson Coliseum.
GOLF
Led by freshman Tiffany Nelson, who placed third individually with a 54-hole score of 82-75-77--234, the Sam Houston
State women's golf team won the Lamar Cardinal Invitational at Beaumont Country Club last Tuesday. Senior Vicky Resnick
finished seventh with a score of 83-76-82--241 and sophomore Lindsey Reed was eighth at 82-82-78--242. The
championship marks the eighth tournament title for the Bearkat women since the women's golf program was brought back
at SHSU in 1997. This is the first title of the season for the 2000 women's team.
The SHSU men's team finished ninth Monday and Tuesday at the Colorado State Ram Invitational in Fort Collins, Co.
James Beston was the top individual performer for the Bearkats, placing 19th with a score of 78-78-69--225. Ryan Polzin
was 28th and Jon Antunes 38th in the individual competition. University of Colorado won the tournament.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Sam Houston State women placed ninth out of 16 teams and the Bearkat men were 16th out of 20 schools in the
Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree at Stillwater, OK, Saturday, the oldest consecutive cross country race in America.
Kacey Phillips was the top individual finisher for the SHSU women, placing 24th. Tony Vining led the Bearkat men with a
64th place individual finish.
TENNIS
The Sam Houston State women's tennis team opens its 2000 fall semester schedule this weekend, traveling to Denton to
play in the North Texas Invitiational. Ivette Andrade and Kristen Wooten return from last year's Bearkat squad that earned a
Southland Conference post-season playoff bid. Newcomers for the Bearkats include Diala Ammar, Kim Gardiner, Jayme
Holmstrom, Kimberly Jordan, Laura Petty, Andrea Slatter, and Stephenie Smith.
