Sports Update For Week Of Nov. 19
FOOTBALL POSTS BEST SEASON SINCE 1991
The 2000 Sam Houston State football team completed its most successful
season since 1991 by posting a 7-4 record this fall. Five of the seven
victories came on the road. Only four times before in Sam Houston's 85
years of college football has a Bearkat team won five or more road
games. Senior wide receiver Matt Dominguez closed out his Bearkat career
with totals of 211 catches for 3,273 yards and 27 touchdowns. All three
of those marks are both Southland Football League and Sam Houston State
career records. Dominguez caught at least one pass in 42 of his 44 games
as a Bearkat. Senior quarterback Albert Bradley completed his Kat career
ranked sixth in all-time Sam Houston State passing with five-year marks
of 3,713 yards passing and 23 career touchdown passes. Senior Chris
Foster ended the season ranked second in the SFL in kickoff returns with
14 returns for 365 yards.
MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS A&M-KINGSVILLE IN SEASON OPENER
The Sam Houston State men's basketball team opened the 2000-2001 regular
season with a 79-66 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night at
Johnson Coliseum. Senecca Wall led the Bearkats with 21 points. Four
other Kats scored in double figures including Derrick Douglas 16,
Demetrice Sims 13, Eddy Barlow 11, and Jeremy Burkhalter 11. In the
first half, the lead switched hands six times, but the Bearkats took a
36-28 halftime lead which they held throughout the second period. Sam
Houston State travels to Mississippi on Wednesday and to South Alabama
on Saturday before returning home to Johnson Coliseum for a Tuesday,
Nov. 28, game against LeTourneau.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO 9TH RANKED LSU
The Sam Houston State women's basketball team fell to ninth-ranked LSU
Saturday 92-52 to open its 2000-2001 schedule. Stacy Allen led the women
with 14 points. Brenda Abakwue pulled down nine rebounds. The SHSU
women's basketball team plays the University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Rajun Cajuns on Tuesday night. The women return home Sunday, Nov. 26, to
play host to Centenary at 4 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
SAM HOUSTON'S KACEY PHILLIPS NAMED NCAA ALL-REGION
Kacey Phillips, who led the Sam Houston State women's cross country team
to both its highest Southland Conference and NCAA South Central Region
finishes ever this fall, has been named NCAA All-Region. Phillips
becomes Sam Houston State's first ever women's cross country NCAA
All-Region selection.
Phillips led the Sam Houston State women's cross country team to a sixth
place finish out of the 32 teams that participate in the South Central
Region championships. She finished 20th individually.
SAM HOUSTON TO HOST TWO HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF GAMES
Sam Houston State's Bowers Stadium will be the site of two high school
football playoff games Thanksgiving weekend. Netwon (7-4) plays Rice
Consolidated (9-2) in a Class AAA Division II regional at 7:30 p.m.
Friday. Harker Heights (9-2) meets Beaumont Ozen (9-2) at 2 p.m.
Saturday in a Class AAAA Division II regional.
