SHSU Update for Week of November 19
Musicians Now Attend 'School'The Department of Music at Sam Houston State University is now the School of Music. The name change is official, after approval by both the university's board of regents and the state coordinating board."Traditionally, the designation 'Department of Music' is used to indicate small-sized units that offer only undergraduate programs, have small faculty/staff numbers, and limited library holdings," said Robert Walzel, who chairs the school. "The term 'School of Music' is typically used to denote programs that offer undergraduate and graduate programs, have significant library holdings, contribute in a significant manner to the culture of the area, and are leading institutions in the region. "Given these criteria, the term 'school' more closely describes the music unit at Sam Houston State and best represents its size and scope to the outside world."
