Sports Update For Week Of Nov. 26
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Two strong showings on the road against top teams gave Bearkat fans an
indication that the Sam Houston State men's basketball team will again
be in the heat of the Southland Conference title race in 2001. Sam
Houston State lost to Mississippi in Oxford 71-65 Wednesday and fell to
South Alabama 70-66 in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday.
Senecca Wall led the Bearkats with 24 points and five rebounds at
Mississippi. Demetrice Sims added 17 points and Derrick Douglas scored
11 and pulled down 10 rebounds.
South Alabama, a pre-season National Invitational Tournament
participant, had to rally from 11 points down with four minutes to play
to pull out a narrow victory over the young Bearkats. Jeremy Burkhalter
led Sam Houston State in scoring with 22 points.
Sam Houston State returns home to Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday night in a
non-conference game against LeTourneau College. The Bearkats travel to
Southwest Missouri State to play in the Pizza Inn Classic on Friday and
Saturday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Mandy Frazer and Stacy Allen each scored 21 points and Alice Johnson
added 20 more as the Sam Houston State women's basketball team picked up
its first victory of the 2000-2001 season with a 92-45 victory over
Centenary Sunday afternoon. Frazer went five of nine from three point
range to lead a hot-shooting group of Kats as the SHSU women hit 41.3
per cent from the field. The Kats jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led
40-20 at halftime.
Earlier in the week, the SHSU women almost achieved an upset on the road
at Louisiana-Lafayette. With only seven players available (Alice Johnson
was serving a one-game suspension for an ejection in the season opener
at LSU and Stacy Allen was out with a back injury), the Bearkats charged
back from 11 points down in the final two minutes to have a shot to win
the game in the final few seconds. Brenda Abakwue, who scored 25 points,
led the comeback. Rotasha Allison, who scored 15 points, had a shot at
the buzzer than rimmed out as Louisiana-Lafayette held on to win 70-68.
The next game for the Sam Houston State women is Wednesday when the Kats
travel to Austin to meet the Texas Longhorns.
FOOTBALL
Four Sam Houston State football players were named as first team
selections on the 2000 All-Southland Football League honor squad
selected by the eight SFL head coaches. The four were free safety Keith
Davis, wide receiver Matt Dominguez, tight end Keith Heinrich, and
defensive lineman Reginald Reddick.
Davis, a junior from Italy who led the Bearkats with 99 tackles this
year, also was named Southland Football League "Defensive Player of the
Year."
The four first team All-SFL selections led Sam Houston State to a 7-4
record during the 2000 season, SHSU's best record since 1991.
Dominguez, a senior from Georgetown, led the SFL in pass receiving for
the third year in a row and completed his career as the league's
all-time leading receiver with 211 career catches for 3,273 yards and 27
touchdowns.
Heinrich, a junior from Tomball, caught 25 passes for 224 yards and was
an outstanding blocker. Reddick, a junior from Dallas Lincoln, led the
Bearkat defensive line in tackles with 55 including 11 for losses.
Six Bearkats were named honorable mention All-SFL including wide
receiver Jonathon Cooper, offensive linemen Damon Cobb and Billy
Williams, defensive end Trent Taylor, and linebackers Tommy Tull and
