SHSU Update for Week of November 26

Computing Students Do Well in Regionals

Two teams of computing science students from Sam Houston State placed 9th and 38th among 63 teams competing in the regional ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) International Collegiate Programming Contest in Baton Rouge, La.

Some of the top teams included UT Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor. The SHSU "Team Bubba" finished ahead of teams from Oklahoma, University of Miami, LSU, Baylor, University of Houston, TCU, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M.

The contest matches teams of three students against six to eight real-world computing problems, which must be solved in a set amount of time. Students rely on their programming savvy, creativity and teamwork as they race against the clock in a five-hour battle of logic, strategy and mental endurance.

Teams are ranked based on solving the most problems in the fewest attempts and the least amount of time.

SHSU computing science students have done well in several of the regional contests, and in April, 1999, a SHSU team advanced to the international finals in The Netherlands.

Nobel Laureate Lecture is Tuesday

Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize laureate whose agricultural accomplishments are credited with saving millions of people from starvation throughout the world, will be the 2000 Agricultural Achievement Lecturer for the Sam Houston State University Department of Agricultural Sciences.

Borlaug's lecture will be titled "Food Needs for the World Population for the Year 2025." It will be presented at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 28) in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom on the SHSU campus. The public is invited to attend at no charge.

Born in Iowa, Borlaug is now 86 and continues his work from his Texas base at College Station, where he is a distinguished professor of international agriculture at Texas A&M University. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970.

Dance Spectrum Presents 'Bolero'

Sam Houston State University's award-winning Dance Spectrum Company will stage three performances Thursday (Nov. 30) through Saturday (Dec. 2) in the University Theatre Center Mainstage Theatre.

Featured will be the choreography of renowned Flamenco artist Luis Montero set to Ravel's "Bolero." Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

'Messiah,' Jazz Ensemble, Tree of Light, Lots Closed, Commencement

The SHSU/Huntsville Symphonic Chorus, under the direction of Allen Hightower will perform "The Messiah" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 28) in the First Baptist Church. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for students, with free admission for Friends of Music and faculty/staff and students with SHSU identification...The SHSU Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Rod Cannon will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 30) in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium. Tickets are $8 adults, $5 children, SHSU employees, students, and Friends of Music free...The 80th Annual Tree of Light ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 30) just east of the Administration Building. Participants are encouraged to bring wrapped toys, labeled by gender and age group, for the SAAFE House, and non-perishable food items for the Good Shepherd Mission. There will be a traditional holiday program and refreshments...Sam Houston State University parking lots on either side of 20th street, between Sam Houston Ave. and Ave. J, will be used as the staging area for the Huntsville Noon Lions Club Christmas parade scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 2)...Robert Dunning, SHSU registrar, has announced that candidates for degrees to be awarded during commencement exercises Dec. 9 may confirm their completion of degree requirements by Internet (Registrar's Office), by visiting the office on the first floor of the Administration Building, or by calling 936.294.1032. That office also has details on parking and seating for guests with disabilities, who are advised to arrive at least 45 minutes before the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies.
