Acclaimed Pianist to Perform

The concert will be given in the Recital Hall at 7:30 p. m. Monday (Dec. 4).

The series of three concerts has been made possible with a grant from the Huntsville Arts Commission. In February the series continues with guest artists Michael Gurt (Louisiana State University) and Zoya Shuhakovich (University of Houston).

Roux, who has performed in 15 countries on four continents, has been a winner of several piano competitions in the United States, including the United States Information Agency�s Artistic Ambassador Competition and the International Piano Recording Competition.

"His distinctive interpretations are born of a lifetime of study with such renowned artists as Lili Kraus, Leonard Shure, Adele Marcus, William Race, and John Perry," said Clive Swansbourne, a concert pianist who is coordinator of piano studies at SHSU.

"He is a Steinway Artist, and his performances include appearances at the White House, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Stude Concert Hall in Houston on the Horowitz Steinway, St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music, and Villa Pignatelli in Naples," Swansbourne said.

In addition to his years at Rice, he has taught on the faculties of the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, Arizona State University at Tempe, and Wichita State University in Kansas. His students have been frequent award winners in national level competitions in the United States, and he is listed as one of the top teachers in Benjamin Saver�s recent publication, "The Most Wanted Piano Teachers in the USA ."

Roux's program will consist of sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven, (the famous "Waldstein"), and works by Debussy and Brahms.

Tickets will be $8 adults and $5 students at the door, with admission free for Friends of Music, SHSU students and faculty with ID.

Parents Support Finals Effort

"We know how stressful final exams can be, so we like to show our support to the entire student body and hope they each do well on their tests and final projects," said Buddy Moody, president of the association.

Each semester, the Parents' Association hosts two Apple Days giving out more than 1,200 apples and 5,000 Scantrons.

The Parents' Association is an organization of SHSU parents who actively support the students through awarding scholarships and hosting special events. The association raises funds from member dues and events for its annual scholarships. The association also plans Parents' Weekend each fall semester and conducts parent seminars during summer orientation.

"Parents, guardians and families of Sam Houston students are encouraged to join the association not only to support students, but also to have a primary link to the university. Through events like Parents' Weekend and a periodically published newsletter, members stay involved and informed about campus issues, events and news," said Moody.

Food for Thought

Students are invited to come enjoy breakfast and banana splits to get them in the mindset for finals from 10-11:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 7) in Cafe Belvin. Finals continue through Dec. 13.

Faculty, staff and administrators are invited to participate by acting as servers.

"It is a lot of fun for those who can handle the late hours," said Mary Ellen Sims, who along with Aramark's Rick Lester, coordinates the event.

Sunday Recitals

Bayless will perform a vocal concert of works by Samuel Barber, Stephen Foster, Giacomo Puccini, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert and Hall Johnson. He will be accompanied by Trista Furman and Vickie Dennis on piano.

White's program will include works by Pierre-Petit, Paul Hindemith, Edward Gregson, William Schmidt and Jan Koetsier.

Assisting White will be Joanna Thompson (piano), Kevin Goodson (flute), Kimber McClellan (bassoon), Matthew Bunge (oboe), Paul Hogue (trombone), Chrissie Derimee (clarinet), David Richard (trombone), Leigh Ann Moya (horn) and Henry Howey (trombone).

Sommer's concert will feature percussion works. Admission to each of the concerts is free.

An Evening with Ron Rozelle

The event is sponsored by the Texas Review Press, which published Rozelle's novel based on the Galveston hurricane of 1900, "The Windows of Heaven," and his East Texas Memoir, "Into That Good Night."
