A Week of Music

The piano concerto festival is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday (March 20) in the Recital Hall, featuring performances by six talented young pianists. The performers and composers of their pieces include:
Kalli Elliot (Mozart), Joanna Thompson (Franck), Joseph Fuller (Beethoven), Vanessa Jackson (Saint-Saens), Natalie Wilkins (Chopin) and So Yun Kim (Beethoven).

On Tuesday (March 20), also at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall, the Sigma Alpha Iota chapter at Sam Houston State University will celebrate its 50th year with a concert. Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity for women, founded in 1903.

On Tuesday members will perform music by Walter Foster, Paul Basler, Richard Rodgers, Lucy Simon, John Alden Carpenter, Kip Wile, Lee Hoiby, Ned Rorem, Stephen Foster, Sigmund Romberg, and Jerome Kern.

On Saturday (March 25) at 7:30 p.m., the 55-member Sam Houston State University Symphony Orchestra takes the stage in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium, with Carol Smith as conductor and Andrew Wilson as featured soloist.

The orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms' Tragic Overture, Franz Liszt's Le Preludes, and Felix Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, with Wilson as soloist.

Wilson earned a Bachelor of Music in performance at the Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music in performance from the University of Akron. He has taught at the University of Virginia, where his concerts were broadcast on Virginia Public Radio, and served as concertmaster of the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra.

One critic wrote of a Charlottesville Symphony performance, "Concertmaster Andrew Wilson's solo was as good as it gets...it was the highlight of this reviewer's afternoon."

Wilson has performed extensively across North America as soloist and chamber musician including performances with the Apollo and Sivori String Quartets. He has also been the principal second violin of the Akron Symphony, and has received many awards including first prizes in the Dallas Symphonic Festival and Tuesday Musical Club Violin Competition.

He has been a member of the Aurora Piano Trio, has served as concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony, associate concertmaster with the Corpus Christi Symphony and performed with the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra.

He came to Sam Houston State after four years of teaching and performing in Corpus Christi as professor of violin and viola and conductor of the Del Mar College Concert Orchestra and String Ensemble.

Choir To Perform Bach, Saul, Folk Songs and Spirituals

The featured work on the first half of the program will be one of the earliest sacred cantatas of J. S. Bach, Cantata 150 - Nach dir Herr verlanget mich (I Long for You, Lord).

The Concert Choir will be accompanied by student and faculty instrumentalists, including Andrew Wilson and Veronica Wilson on violin, Andrea Gauthier on bassoon, Mike Ross on cello, and Marie Miller on the keyboard.

"Unlike many of Bach's sacred cantatas that are comprised largely of solo movements, this cantata is scored primarily for chorus," said Brian Miller.

Of the seven movements, only one is a solo aria, and will be performed by SHSU freshman soprano Cheryl Ricks. A trio and brief incidental solos in the cantata will be performed by Julie Collmorgen, soprano, Giny Mendez, mezzo-soprano, Philip Young, tenor, and Stacy Noland, bass.

The second half of the concert will open with Saul, a sacred work written by Norwegian composer Egil Hovland.

"Saul is a powerful, contemporary setting of Biblical verses from the Acts of the Apostles," said Miller. "Dr. Tom Soare of the SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance will be featured as narrator.

"In addition to the dramatic reading provided by Dr. Soare, the audience will witness unusual choral techniques and vivid bursts from the pipe organ which add to the drama of this contemporary setting. Joseph Fuller, accompanist for the Concert Choir, will accompany on the organ."

Also featured in the second half will be four American folk songs for chorus and piano arranged by contemporary American composer Anthony Lis. The four folk songs included in the set are Springfield Mountain, Old Joe Clark, Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies, and All The Pretty Little Horses.

Featured will be Fuller at piano, and incidental soloists Rashida Moore, soprano, and Kelly Gotshall, soprano.

To close the concert, SHSU junior mezzo-soprano Maegan Morrow will join the Concert Choir in an arrangement of the popular spiritual, Rock-a-my Soul.

There is no admission charge for the concert and the public is encouraged to attend.

Surplus Property Auction

Other items include chairs, sinks, carpet, overhead projectors, office furniture, tables, beds, typewriters, air conditioners, doors, student desks, television sets, microwave ovens, bicycles, refrigerators, gas-powered trimmers, vacuum cleaners, file cabinets, copiers, light fixtures, vehicles, a soil aerator and more.

The auction is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the university's property warehouse in the Sam South Complex, 2424 Sam Houston Ave. The auction items will be available for inspection from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on the day of the auction.

Activities begin with a 7:30 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. check-in at Johnson Coliseum, and a general assembly at 8:30 a.m. Academic sessions run from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., with a Financial Aid Fair scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in the coliseum.

An Organizations Fair is scheduled in the coliseum from noon until 12:45 p.m., with entertainment, door prizes, T-shirts for sale, and the opportunity to visit with representatives of Financial Aid, Residence Life, Student Activities and Undergraduate Admissions.

Students may even apply for admission and place a deposit for housing.

Campus tours, including a Residence Halls open house, run from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Visitors will also be welcome at the Bearkat baseball doubleheader against the McNeese State Cowboys, which begins at noon.

Library Gets ScienceDirect

Ann Holder, acting director of the library, called ScienceDirect "the most comprehensive database of primary literature in the sciences available today."

ScienceDirect contains the full text of more than 1,100 Elsevier Science journals in the life, physical, medical, technical and social sciences available through the Internet. It also contains abstracts from other core journals in the major scientific disciplines.

A series of workshops on use of the new database will be conducted from 2-3 p.m. March 21-24 and March 27 and 28 in the Multimedia Lab, Room 200, of the library. Because space is limited, those who wish to participate are asked to contact Bronwyn Stewart at Ext. 3587 or Lynn McMain at 936-294-3734 or 936-294-1613 to reserve a workstation.

"This is an important new service and we look forward to introducing it to the faculty and students of Sam Houston State University," said Holder.

SHSU Buyer's Group

"Each year the SHSU buyer's group averages over 100 contributions with an average gift of over $30," said Cathy Moak, director of Institutional Research, who is coordinating this year's buyer's group effort.

Moak said that participation in the scholarship effort is a recruiting tool for the university.

"Donations will go toward the purchase of livestock from those youth interested in attending SHSU," Moak said, "making these donations not just a gift, but an investment."

She encouraged those who wish to participate to send contributions to Box 2448, and to send names of Fair participants interested in attending SHSU. For more information, contact Moak at 936-294-3619.

Former Student Wins Best Paper Award

She is the lead author of the paper, "Ethical Orientations of Upper Level American and Mexican Business Students in Secular and Catholic Universities." She presented her paper Thursday (March 16). She was also recognized at a reception.

Spencer conducted the research for the paper during her last year in the MBA program at SHSU. She now works as manager of the MicroAge Training Center in College Station.
