Audubon Exhibit Opens

On Saturday (April 1) the exhibit "100 Years of Audubon in Texas," shown only in the Capitol Annex in Austin for one week in May 1999, will go on display in the Walker Education Building of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum complex.

The exhibit consists of 19 poster-sized photographs of some of Texas' most beautiful birds. It was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the first Audubon chapter in Texas.

The posters are mounted on a stand made of copper tubing, which was conceived and produced by SHSU fine arts graduate John Stewart.

The exhibit includes information on the history of the Audubon Society in Texas, and information about efforts to conserve habitat and wildlife in the past 100 years.

Rodeo Dance Discounts Offered

Participation in the street dance following Thursday's (March 30) downtown Huntsville parade will be free. The street dance will be held in the parking lot near the McKenzie's barbecue restaurant.

In order to receive the $2 discount for the other two dances, participants must buy a rodeo ticket to show along with their SHSU identification. Showing SHSU identification alone earns a $1 discount.

Tickets are $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door for the kick-off event, which features Daryle Singletary. The closing dance features "Texas The Band," with tickets priced at $6 pre-sale and $8 at the door.

"We've had good campus participation in many of the fair events over the years," said Kevin Hayes, co-chairman of marketing and promotions for the Fair. "But we wanted to give Sam students and staff a little extra incentive this year, and to let them know that they are especially welcome."

Contributions are also still being accepted for the SHSU Buyer's Group, which each year bids on livestock owned by students interested in attending SHSU. Anyone wishing to participate may send contributions to Cathy Moak at Box 2448 on campus, as well as the names of fair participants interested in attending SHSU. 'Substance Abuse and Technology'

J. David Coldren, director of Advanced Information Technologies for the University of Illinois College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will be the featured speaker.

A former executive director of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, Coldren joined the University of Illinois at Chicago's Office of International Criminal Justice in 1993, where his research has focused on the use of the Internet to promote international understanding of the rule of law.

During his tenure as executive director of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, he concentrated on improving the administration of justice through research, long-range planning, and information technologies.

He was elected by his colleagues to two terms as president of the National Criminal Justice Association and served on a number of state and national boards and commissions. Under his leadership of the NCJA, the organization worked to establish victim assistance and domestic violence prevention programs throughout the country.

Colder has served as a keynote speaker at the United Nations Congress on Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention in Cairo, Egypt and has lectured on criminal justice information technologies in Asia, Africa, and Europe as well as throughout the United States.

His current criminal justice research and development initiatives include independent learning via the Internet, the development of web sites to enhance community policing initiatives, and an exploration of new applications for wireless, ubiquitous web appliances.

Hayes Named to Development Post

"We are glad to have a person of Kevin's interests and abilities to join our staff," said Gary Bouse, executive director of university advancement. "He will play a key role in the expansion of the university's development activities."

Hayes is a native of Pasadena, and earned his bachelor of business administration degree from Sam Houston State in 1989. He worked as an engineering administrative assistant for the S.I.P./Parsons company in Houston, was an independent manufacture representative for Puddington Gatewood Inc. in Houston, and is former owner of Appliance Warehouse Plus Interiors in Huntsville.

Since returning to Huntsville in 1996, he has been active in the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce, earning that group's Key Member of the Year award in 1999. He is also a graduate of the chamber's Huntsville Leadership Institute.

He has served as chairperson of the Walker County Fair Association and co-chairs the marketing/promotions area for this year's fair and rodeo. He has also been involved in Huntsville YMCA activities and coached youth baseball and soccer.

Hayes and his wife, Jackie, a former all-America softball player at Sam Houston State, have two children, Jordan, 9, and Chad, 6.

Composers to Meet

Related performances are scheduled Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the Recital Hall and 7:30 p.m. in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium.
