SHSU Update for Week of April 16

Jazz on Tap

The New Jazz Singers, two flute choirs and the SHSU Jazz Ensemble will lay down some cool sounds Tuesday (April 18), presenting "An Evening of Jazz" at 7:30 p.m. in Room 201 of the Fine Arts Building.

On the program for the New Jazz Singers are "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Serenade in Blue." Performers include Penny Kershaw, Brooke Doegey, Katie Marfell, Tamara Stewart, Steve Bayless, Raul Enriquez and Kip Wile.

The Monday Flute Choir, composed of Erica Behmer, Melissa Benkula, Keri Butcher, Kristy Carter, Kasey Cole, Jennifer Howell, Elisabeth Niblett and Jennifer Shoemaker, will perform Henry Mancini's "The Pink Panther Suite."

The Friday Flute Choir, composed of Andrea Garza, Kim Guzman, Brad Harris, Barbara Crow, Kevin Goodson and Elizabeth Niblett, will perform "Music from Brazil."

The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Rod Cannon, will perform three numbers. Kevin Goodson, Eric Della Vecchia and Anthony Manzi are soloists for "Threshold."

Manzi and Natalie Wilkins will solo on "The Delta City Blues," and Patrick Peacock, Della Vecchia and Todd Sommer on "Time Check."

Additional members of the Jazz Ensemble are Cody Craig, Woodrow Smith, Brian Largent, Heather Marsh, Oscar Garza, Matt Martinez, Jamie Bunch, Nathan Pair, David Richard, Paul Hogue, Jesse Ibarra, Jeremy Wells and Brandon Bickham.

Faculty/Staff Golf Tournament

The Department of Recreational Sports has announced details for the 6th Annual Faculty/Staff Golf Scramble scheduled for May 15 at the Westwood Shores Golf Course and Country Club near Trinity. The shotgun start is set for 8 a.m.

Teams of four persons, all of whom must be members of the faculty/staff, can consist of any combination of men and women. Single entries will also be accepted and teams formed from these entries. Entry deadline is May 10.

The $35 per person entry fee includes green fee, cart, range balls, goodie bag, soft drinks, and individual and team awards including long drive and closest to the pin.

Sponsors include Advantage Specialties, Coca-Cola, Heartfield Florist, Huntsville Lanes, Manna Bread, Murski's, University Cleaners, Fairway Barber Shop, Jose's Mexican Restaurant, SHSU Outdoor Rental, Luby's Cafeteria and Newman's Office Supply.

Also, Cafe Texan, Golden Corral, Hillcrest Ford, La Quinta Inn, Mr. Gatti's Pizza, Tune-up Plus, Quizno's, Cloud 9 Cafe, Comet Cleaners, I.H.O.P, Sunflower Graphics and Chili's.

Sammy Awards Program

The Oscars have come and gone, and now it's Sammys time.

The student leadership awards ceremony sponsored by the Department of Student Activities and the Vice President for Student Services, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday (April 19) in Killinger Auditorium.

Participants are asked to indicate their intention to participate by calling 936-294-3861 or going by the Department of Student Activities in room 316 of the Lowman Student Center. The reservation deadline is Monday (April 17).

Awards will be presented to organizations in the categories of community service, cultural, honorary, academic, special interest, religious, and social fraternity and sorority.

Also, awards for outstanding community service project, new student organization, student organization, first, second and third year student leader, non-traditional student leader, male senior, female senior, and adviser.

Application Deadline

Students who anticipate graduating on December 9 are required to file degree applications by May 1 with the Registrar's Office in White Hall.

Final exams for December degree candidates will be held December 4 and 5.
