Summer Sessions Begin This Week

Registration for Summer Session II is July 6, with classes beginning July 7 and finals scheduled Aug. 9. Summer commencement is Aug. 12. Classes begin for the 2000 fall semester Aug. 23.

Museum Offerings Include Sam's Camp

One of the activities is a program called "Sam's Camp." Students are grouped in grades 2-4 and 5-8 for week-long programs which begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. each day. Sessions for grades 2-4 are scheduled the weeks of June 19, July 10 and July 24. Sessions for grades 5-8 are June 26 and July 17.

Parents are responsible for transportation to and from facilities. Fees are $25 per day or $100 per week. Call 936.294.3025 to register or receive more information.

Also planned are a number of Saturday demonstrations, each from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They include pottery-making June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5; blacksmithing June 17, July 15 and Aug. 19, Cherokee Indian Culture & Crafts July 8 and Aug. 12, and weaving and spinning July 22 and Aug. 26.

Additional special programs and exhibits include a "Weekend at Bear Bend" 19th century live-in at Carroll Tharp's Fernland near Montgomery, June 9-11; an exhibit entitled "A Brief History of Time Travel" with opening from 5-7 p.m. June 22 and running through September; and an exhibit of Alabama-Coushatta Indian Baskets and Crafts from Aug. 1-Aug. 31.

Summer Learning Camps Offered

The programs are Camp Paw Print, which offers activities in math, social studies, science and literature, and a Tech-Math Summer Camp, in which students will do hands-on computer design work. Both are geared to students finishing 4th, 5th or 6th grades.

Paw Print activities are scheduled from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. and Tech-Math from 1-4 p.m. The Paw Print registration fee is $30. The Tech-Math registration fee is $150.

"Our goal is to provide a program that will enrich and stimulate students," said Robin McGrew-Zoubi, Paw Print director. "The camp will focus on student experience through hands-on/minds-on activities that encompass a wide range of areas."

College of Education faculty will guide pre-service teachers during the two weeks, which serve as a laboratory teaching experience for the students.

Joan Prouty, who directs the Tech-Math camp, said that three-student teams will generate a Power Point and/or Hyper Studio presentation of their original design for a new community park in Huntsville.

Signups Under Way for Mickey's Tourney

This year the event held in honor of the late Fisher A. "Mickey" Tull, distinguished professor of music at Sam Houston State University, is scheduled for June 23 at the Wedgewood golf course near Conroe.

Proceeds from the tournament go into a scholarship endowment in the Department of Music at Sam Houston State.

Format for the event is a four-person scramble. Play is scheduled to begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Players may enter as members of teams or individually, to be placed on a team.

The entry fee of $99 per player includes practice balls, cart, refreshments and lunch.

Additional awards include first, second and third place team trophies, awards for individual contests such as long drive, closest-to-the-hole and farthest-from-the-hole, and door prizes.

For those unable to play in the fund-raiser, sponsorships are also available at $100 per hole, with advertisements on a tee box, and $99 to sponsor a music/student golfer as a "designated hitter." Direct contributions to the scholarship fund are also appreciated.

SHSU Represented At National Finals Rodeo

Five Sam Houston State University students will compete in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association's College National Finals Rodeo June 13-17 in Casper, Wyo.

Making the trip will be women's team members Brooke Oden, junior barrel racer from Marshall; Mendy Wright, senior breakaway roper from Robstown; Morgan Figueroa, freshman barrel racer from Mathis; and Mary Moore, freshman barrel racer from Helotes. Also competing individually in the steer wrestling event will be Clint Shofner, freshman from Jasper.

Roger Walters and Roger Hanagriff are the team coaches.

The SHSU rodeo team has won more national team titles than any other NIRA program, with the men winning in 1956 and 1968 and women in 1961, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1974 and 1984. The men's team finished second in 1985, 1989 and 1990.

There have also been a number of individual champions, including program founder and now-retired coach Sonny Sikes, who was the calf roping and ribbon roping champion in 1953 and 1955, through Jason Jeter, who won in bareback bronc riding in 1996.

SHSU each year awards the equivalent of over $35,000 in scholarships to students who participate on the rodeo teams.

Apply Now For Fall Scholarships

Scholarships are for full-time benefits-eligible staff and faculty, through the rank of assistant professor, who desire to take one class or one class with a lab (four semester credit hours maximum) at SHSU. The selection criteria includes:

• Applicants must have a minimum of one year full-time continuous employment at SHSU and have earned at least three semester hours with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

• Undergraduate students with a 2.5 GPA or greater will be given 1st priority.

• Graduate students with a 3.5 GPA or greater will be given second priority.

Gaddis Geeslin Gallery Exhibits

The Art Endowment Scholarship exhibit includes ceramics by Kathy Blossom, sculpture and drawing by J. R. Kidd, drawing and graphics by Melissa Compton, and painting and printmaking by Brandon Posmoga.

Also scheduled this summer will be an exhibit of paintings by SHSU alumnus Brandon Graham.

Intensive Study Skills

"Four or five group times are made available each semester so that it is easy to find a time that will fit into even the busiest schedule," said Bernice Strauss, counseling services director.

During the first summer session groups will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays June 5, 12, 19 and 26. Also, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays June 6, 13, 20 and 27. Also, 11-12 Wednesdays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 and Thursdays 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. June 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Alpha Chi Members Selected

Tannie H. Shannon was selected for one of 10 H. Y. Benedict Fellowships of $2,500 for the first year of graduate study. Julie M. Jackson was named as first alternate for one of 10 Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships of $1,500 for the senior undergraduate year.

Alpha Chi has chapters at some 300 institutions in almost every state and Puerto Rico. The SHSU chapter, Texas Omicron, was honored this spring as among 42 chapters receiving the society's Star Chapter Award.
