SHSU Update for Week of May 7

Scott Presented Faculty Scholarship

Marks, Scott, Cooper This year's recipient of the Faculty Centennial Scholarship at Sam Houston State University is Suzanne Michelle Scott, a music major who has performed with the university's marching band, wind ensemble, and symphony, as well as the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra, and Rome (Italy) Festival Orchestra. Presenting the award to Scott, who has a 3.83 grade point average, were Bobby K. Marks, left, SHSU president, and Brian Cooper, who chairs the Faculty Centennial Scholarship Committee.

Fleming Thanked for Faculty Senate Service

Payne, Fleming Bill Fleming, right, professor of English, is presented a plaque by David Payne, vice president for academic affairs, in appreciation of his service during the past year as chair of the Sam Houston State University Faculty Senate. Fleming also served as chair during the 1997-98 academic year and was elected president elect for 2000-01, meaning he will preside again in 2001-02.

COBA Awards $63,300

The College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University awarded $63,300 in scholarships and grants at its annual awards program April 28 in the Ronald P. Mafrige auditorium in the Smith-Hutson Business Building.

The annual convocation recognized the scholastic achievements of 71 of the most outstanding students enrolled in programs in the College of Business Administration. The scholarships and grants were made possible through gifts from alumni, corporate sponsors, faculty, and friends of the university.

The various departments and programs of the College of Business Administration, as well as the college, select those students whose needs and achievements merit special recognition. The program was followed by a reception where faculty and friends could extend their personal congratulations to the students, their families and friends.

Chemistry Scholarships/Fellowships

The Chemistry Department passed out twelve scholarships and six fellowships April 27 at a reception in Austin Hall.

The scholarships and their recipients included: James C. Stallings Scholarship, Melissa Alvarez; the Ray E. Humphrey Scholarship, Andrea Barrett; and the Chemistry Alumni Scholarship, Jacob Chandler.

Chemistry Academic Scholarships went to Shauna Anderson, Jennifer Copeland, David Corley, Christi Jones, Andrew Martin, David Sellars, Stacy Sherrod, Kyle Todd and Michael Towler.

Students who received a Robert A. Welch Fellowship for undergraduate research in chemistry were Shauna Anderson, Jacob Chandler, Mickey Richardson, Sarah Sarabia, Abraham Yousef and Michael Zagryn.

David Corley, Christy Jones, Andrew Martin, and Michael Towler are all from Huntsville. Jacob Chandler is a third generation SHSU student. His grandfather, J. A. Chandler was a dean at SHSU and his father, King Chandler, also received a degree here.
