Faculty Members Give Singapore Seminar

The title of the seminar was Electronic Commerce and Internet Marketing. Presenters were Sanjay Mehta and Douglas M. Kline, both from SHSU's Department of Management and Marketing, and Nari Lulla, president of Lulla-Motion, a consulting services provider located in Singapore.

The seminar was hosted by the Marketing Institute of Singapore (MIS), a non-profit professional organization with over 5000 members that promotes the marketing profession in Singapore.

Kline said the program drew 40 participants, including marketing managers and several managing directors (the equivalent of a chief executive officer in the U.S.).

"Informal feedback was positive and we are expecting to be invited back," Kline said. " We are also investigating speaking in other countries in the area--Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India.

"The government of Singapore is actively positioning Singapore as a hub for e-commerce," he said. "To this end, significant tax breaks and incentives are being given to local and international companies to locate and develop operations in Singapore. Most of the U.S.-based multinational corporations use Singapore as the headquarters of their southeast Asian operations."

Kline is an assistant professor of Management Information Systems (MIS). He received his Ph.D. in business administration in 1995 from Kent State University, specializing in Operations Research and Information Systems.

He joined SHSU in 1997, and helped develop a new MIS major in the College of Business Administration. He teaches MIS courses including Business Database Management, Electronic Commerce Implementation, and Advances in Management Information Systems.

Mehta is an assistant professor of marketing. He received his Ph.D. in marketing in 1998 from the University of North Texas, specializing in International Franchising. He joined SHSU in 1997. He teaches all graduate and undergraduate marketing courses and is teaching a new graduate course in Internet Marketing this fall.

Art Exhibit Opens; Gala Planned

"Paintings by Dana Saulnier and Pamela Marks" opened Aug. 23 and will be featured in Gaddis Geeslin Gallery through Sept. 14.

The Scholarship Gala offers an evening with music, a silent auction and hors d' oeuvres, and celebrates the community's support for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Proceeds go to scholarships within that department.

Theatre and dance productions scheduled for the University Theatre Center's Mainstage Theatre this fall include Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" Oct. 4-7, Shakespeare's "The Tempest" Nov. 15-18, the Dance Spectrum performing "Bolero" Nov. 30 - Dec. 2.

In the spring "Fiddler on the Roof" is scheduled April 4-7 and Dance Spectrum Spring Dances April 26-28.

Productions set for the smaller Showcase Theatre include "Dames at Sea" Sept. 13-16, "The Heidi Chronicles" Oct. 25-28, "The Old Boy" Feb. 14-17, and Experimental Theatre productions Nov. 3-4 and April 18-19.

Other dance events include a Dance Thesis Concert Sept. 21-23, an Alumni Dance Concert Oct. 27-28, Dances at Eight Nov. 1-2, a Senior Dance Studio Feb. 1-2, and the Raven Dance Concert March 28-31. All are scheduled for the Dance Theatre in Academic Building III.

The Department of Art has also scheduled a busy year of exhibitions in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery.

Prints and photographs by Michael Farrell (digital inkjet prints), Dana Moore (photo manipulations), and Corrie McCluskey (GS photographs) are scheduled Sept. 18-Oct. 12, with an opening reception Sept. 21 from 5-7 p.m.

Paintings and ceramics by Patrick Schmidt (paintings), Vincent Burke (ceramics), and Matt Long (ceramics) will be exhibited Oct. 16-Nov. 9, with an opening reception Oct. 19 from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 13 - Nov. 30.

A master of fine arts thesis exhibition of works by Tom Hydrick is scheduled Nov. 13-30, with reception Nov. 30 from 5-7 p.m. A Graduating Seniors Exhibition is scheduled Dec. 4-9, with reception Dec. 9 following commencement.

Spring are events include the 41st Annual Art Faculty Exhibition Jan. 18-Feb. 8, with reception Jan. 18 from 5-7 p.m., and Retrospective Feb. 12-March 8, featuring works by long-time art faculty member Gene Eastman, with reception Feb. 15 from 5-7 p.m.

The Art Scholarship Exhibit, Including works by award recipients in painting, 3D, and printmaking, is scheduled March 19-29, with reception March 22 from 5-7 p.m., the 2nd Annual Juried Student Exhibition April 2-26, with an award ceremony and open house April 26 from 5 to 7 p.m., and spring Graduating Seniors Exhibition April 30-May 5 with reception May 5 following commencement.

'Welcome Week' Is Three Weeks Long

With a week of events already concluded, this week's schedule begins with the Catholic Student Center sponsoring the first student Mass of the fall at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, with free dinner social to follow.

On Monday (Aug. 28) the Black Student Alliance will sponsor Harambee from 7-9 p.m. in the Lee Drain pit, an opportunity for students to meet representatives of predominantly minority student organizations; a Decorate for Block Party is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Catholic Student Center; motivational speaker Tom Ryan will present "How to Kick Butt in College and Your Career" at 7:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom; and the Crossroads Mystery Machine, an evening of spiritual entertainment, a scavenger hunt, and refreshments, is scheduled for 9 p.m. in the Old Main Pit.

On Tuesday (Aug. 29) the Greek Organizations Fair is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall; a Greek Assembly and Info Session at 6:15 p.m. in the Smith-Hutson Auditorium; a Greek Assembly for historically African-American fraternities and sororities at 6:15 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center; another presentation by Tom Ryan on "How to Kick Butt Nutritionally: Fight the Freshman 15" at 7:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom and Capture the Flag, sponsored by Chi Alpha, is set for at 9:17 p.m. at the fountain.

Wednesday's (Aug. 30) schedule includes Sorority Recruitment Orientation at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater; Mascot Try-Outs at 8 p.m. in the Health/Kinesiology Center (applications are due in Student Activities by 5 p.m. Aug. 28); and a Bearkat Block Party at 9 p.m. in the White Hall Parking Lot, hosted by 150 organizations on campus, with music, games, food, giveaways and contests.

On Thursday (Aug. 31) a Kappa Cooldown sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi, with free barbecue and beverages, is set for 6 p.m. at Colony Park.

The final week of the three-week long Welcome Week begins with a Catholic Student Center Bible Study at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 5).

On Wednesday (Sept. 6) there will be a Multicultural Fair at 11 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall area and a Wine-A-Palooza field day at 6 p.m. at Colony Park, featuring the band Wine Field.

The Bearkat football season kicks off with a 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 7) with a Tailgate Party at the Bowers Stadium parking lot, with free food, drinks, giveaways and a band, and a regionally-televised game between Sam Houston State and Southeastern Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in Bowers Stadium.

On Friday (Sept. 8) and Saturday (Sept. 9) the Leadership Challenge is scheduled for the Lowman Student Center, an interactive conference for the enhancement of leadership skills. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday.

New Athletic Ticket Policy

All Sam Houston State faculty-staff and students must have a ticket to be admitted each game. The tickets are free and will be issued on game day upon presentation of an SHSU ID at Gate 1-A at the tent located under the scoreboard at the north end of Bowers Stadium.

Another change this year is that the Sam Houston State Bearkat Marching Band will sit on the west (press box) side of Bowers Stadium in Section H.

When SHSU Faculty-Staff and Students pick up their free ticket each game day, they will have two seating choices. They may choose a reserved seat on the West Side in Section G or the upper part of Section H or a general admission seat on the East Side. Only one ticket will be issued per SHSU ID. West Side seating is contingent upon availability at game time.

SHSU Faculty-Staff Family Athletic Activity Passes which will admit all members of the faculty-staff member's immediate family into all SHSU regular season athletic events (football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, and track) are available at the SHSU Athletic Department for just $30.

Sam Houston State will play five home football games during the 2000 season. Games are Thursday, Sept. 7 Southeastern Oklahoma State, 7 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 23 Texas A&M-Kingsville (Parents' Weekend), 7 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 21 Troy State, 7 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 28 McNeese State (Homecoming), 2 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 18 Southwest Texas (Letterwinners' Day), 2 p.m.

Computer Courses include Introduction to Computers (Sept. 12-Oct. 19), Microsoft Word-Core Level (Sept. 11-Oct. 18), Microsoft Word Intermediate-Proficient Level (Oct. 30-Dec. 11), Microsoft Excel Core Level (Oct. 31-Dec. 12), Beginning Keyboarding (Sept. 7-Dec. 7) and Introduction to PC Troubleshooting (Sept. 12-Oct. 19).

Undergraduate Research Exhibition

More than 30 undergraduate students from across the university who have been involved in research projects and creative activities during the past year will display the results of their efforts as posters, videos, examples of artwork, photographs, etc. Undergraduate students have been involved in these activities for many years at Sam Houston State University. EUReCA is the first campus-wide formal recognition of these efforts.

The exhibition will be opened at 1 p.m. by Brian Chapman, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and will remain open until 5 p.m. All faculty, students and staff are encouraged to attend.
