'Dames at Sea'

Performances are at 8 p.m. in the Showcase Theatre, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Set in 1930 and in the tradition of the Busby Berkley era musicals, the story is centered around a small-town girl named Ruby (Diana Fox) who goes to New York to become an actress. She is swept off her feet by Dick (Chris Zelko), a Broadway hoofer with a heart of gold.

When Ruby joins the cast of the show, Joan (Johnna Meyer) takes Ruby under her wing, while Mona (Leanne Hill), the company's current star, plots to keep Ruby's talent from the public eye. Suddenly, the Works Progress Administration closes the theatre, and the cast is forced to find a new vessel for their performance.

Directed and choreographed by Jonathan Charles, "Dames at Sea" also features Matt Tompkins, Sara Kendrick, Molly Hannon, Spencer Plachy, Stephen Pavalock, Tye Blue, James Lane, Clint Jackson, Matt Daugherty, Shara Armstrong, Rhonda Curfman, Nicole Nicholson and Leah Jordan.

LouAnn Miles, executive secretary for SHSU Career Services, is the musical director for the production with D. J. McHenry as stage manager. The set was designed by junior theatre major Jeremy Byford, with McHenry doubling on lighting design and Charles on costumes.

Organizations/Administrators Fair

The Fair gives student organizations an opportunity to promote themselves to new and returning students who might be looking to join a student group. As well, new students will have the opportunity to meet the student leaders of the student organizations on campus.

During the Fair, Aramark will provide lunch, which will be served by faculty and staff from all over campus. Students who eat on a campus meal plan will have their lunch in the Mall area. The meal will cost $5 for anyone who does not have a campus meal plan.

Any student organization which would like to register for the Fair should visit the Department of Student Activities (LSC Suite 316) or call 936.294.3861.

Any faculty or staff member interested in serving lunch during the Fair, should contact the Office of Student Life at 936.294.1785.

Study Skills Groups Expanding

At the Counseling Center groups attend six sessions of an hour each, covering basic information needed to be successful at a university, on such subjects as procrastination, time management, and test taking.

Interested students should call the Counseling Center at 936.294.1720 to save a spot.

Because these Counseling Center sessions have been so successful, the Center in conjunction with Student Activities is offering study skills sessions in the lobby of the Gresham Library on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 12.

During these sessions there will be a formal presentation on a study skills topic and then specific questions or concerns will be addressed.

Bernice Straus, counseling center director, said that no sign-up necessary for the library sessions-- "just come along."

Diverse Populations Conference

Theme for this year's conference is "Technology-Odyssey into the Classroom." Fees range from $15 - $35. Lunch is included.

Honorees and guest speakers are Minerva Perez and Raul Hinojosa. Other conference highlights include a Scholastic Book Fair, Essay Contest and Technology Exhibit.

Organization Meetings Required

All registered student organizations should send at least two representatives to one of the meetings. Student organizations are urged to send new officers and members who have not attended the meetings before.

At the meeting, student groups will receive information about services offered through the Department of Student Activities and information about Homecoming, Parents' Weekend, Operation Orange, and other special events.

Student Wins Conference Scholarship

Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation, will be the conference keynote speaker.

"We have a very small number of women in our computer science department," said Gilbert. "And the great majority of our computer science profs are male. This conference is partially intended to give women in computer science a way of meeting other women interested in the same research and/or ideas, so that we don't feel like such minorities in our field and to provide female role models to look to."

Gilbert is doing her thesis on artificial intelligence and there will be a special session that subject. She expects to graduate in May 2001.

She credited David Burris, who chairs the Computer Science Department, for assisting her in the scholarship application process.

Debate Team Faces Busy Schedule

Their locations and dates include Johnson County Community College (Sept. 22-24), Middle Tennessee State University (Oct. 6-8), Sam Houston State University (Oct. 13-15), North Harris Community College (Nov. 3-5), LSU-Shreveport (Nov. 17-19) and University of North Texas (Dec. 2-4).

The 2000-2001 intercollegiate debate topic for policy debate is: Resolved: that the United States federal government should substantially increase its development assistance, including increasing government to government assistance, within the Greater Horn of Africa.

New Risk Management Guidelines

The University has instituted these new guidelines to help student groups reduce some of the risk inherent in operating a student group and sponsoring events. The target areas in the policy include alcohol and drugs, hazing, sexual abuse and harassment, and travel.

All student organizations should send at least two representatives to one of the following meetings--Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. or Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. in the LSC Theatre.
