ORANGE LIGHTS TO SHINE ON AUSTIN HALL
A new tradition for Sam Houston State University begins this fall as the
SHSU administration has announced that the orange color lights for
Austin Hall will be turned on following Bearkat victories in Southland
Conference play or in SLC or NCAA post-season tournament action.
Austin Hall, the oldest in-use educational building west of the
Mississippi River, is the centerpiece of the SHSU campus and is the
architectural symbol of the university. Sam Houston attended the
dedication of the building in 1851.
"Everyone involved with Sam Houston State athletics is excited about
this new tradition," said Director of Athletics Bobby Williams. "We want
to say thank you to University President Bobby Marks, Vice President for
Student Services Thelma Douglass, and Vice President for Finance Jack
Parker for this special recognition. Also, we have to thank the SHSU
Physical Plant for their work with installing the orange lights and SHSU
Public Safety Services who actually implement the turning on of the
lights after a victory.
"Our coaches and athletes appreciate the great support we receive from
both the administration and the student body," said Williams. "This is
one more way that the university shows that everyone is behind our
student-athletes."
The orange lights at Austin Hall will be turned on immediately following
a Southland Conference/Southland Football League regular season or a
Southland or NCAA post-season tournament victory for each of SHSU's 15
varsity sports teams. The lights will remain on for a 24-hour period.
LUCKY FOOTBALL FAN COULD WIN NEW CAR
Hillcrest Ford and Sam Houston State have teamed up to give Bearkat
football fans the opportunity to win a new car this season at Bowers
Stadium. Fans may enter simply by attending any (or all) of the next
three SHSU home games and placing an entry form in box at the gates. The
week before the final home game against Southwest Texas, one lucky fan's
name will be drawn from those entries. The contestant will be introduced
at halftime of the SWT game and will have the opportunity to win the car
by kicking a 45-yard field goal.
