Campus Charity Campaign Kicks Off

The thrust of the campaign will run during September, according to Mary Evelyn Collins, SECC campus chair and Public Communication Department faculty member.

Materials for the campaign are being distributed to the campus by committee members the week of Sept. 4-8. Charities which benefit from the campaign will also set up information tables in the Lowman Student Center Mall Sept. 5-27.

The charities and the dates in which they will be set up include:

Sept. 5: SaafeHouse of Walker County;
Sept. 6: C.O.M.E. (Christian Organization for Missionary Endeavor);
Sept. 7: Rita B. Huff Humane Society;
Sept. 13: Girl Scouts of America, San Jacinto Council;
Sept. 14: Senior Center of Walker County;
Sept. 19: American Red Cross, Walker County Branch;
Sept. 20: Montgomery/Walker County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse;
Sept. 21: Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council;
Sept. 26: Statewide Federation Day: State federations representing over 200 charities;
Sept. 27: United Way of Walker County.

Free ice and filtered water will be available at the tables. New SECC logo insulated mugs will be for sale for $4.

Faculty and staff may give by payroll deduction, check or cash. All donations must be accompanied by a completed pledge/donation form and returned to the committee member distributing the forms.

Any committee member can help any faculty or staff member with explanation of the form. All information is confidential.

Last year the faculty and staff gave in excess of $10,000 to the campaign, designated to a wide range of charities. Each donor must designate a charity or charities to receive the gift. Each charity that has proven to the SECC policy board in Austin that it is a true non-profit delivering the services promised is listed with an individual number.

Faculty and staff are urged to check the numbers that they list for charities carefully in order to get the donation to the right place.

Graduate Students Win Research Awards

Another business administration graduate student, Richard E. Martin, won second place in local and regional competitions, and a total of $400 in the Donald W. Fogarty International Student Paper Competition sponsored by the American Production and inventory Control Society (APICS).

Both papers resulted from research the students conducted under the guidance of management and marketing faculty member Vic Sower.

Grant's paper is entitled "Using Manufacturing Techniques to Improve Scheduling and Resource Allocation for Repetitive Projects," and Martin's "The Human Side of Quality: Keeping People in the Equation."

The competition begins with students submitting papers to the Houston chapter of APICS, in competition with Texas A&M, the University of Houston, and other Houston-area universities.

Winning papers at the chapter level go on to the Regional Level, comprised of Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Mexico, and then to the national level.

SHSU students have a record of excellence in this competition. Since 1993, SHSU graduate students from the College of Business Administration have won first place in the Chapter Level competition five times, second place seven times, and third place twice. In addition, SHSU student papers have claimed first place once, second place three times and third place twice in regional competition.

Kappa Sigma Chapter Recognized For Excellence

The Leadership Conference Program of Kappa Sigma was held in five geographical locations in the United States and over 1,100 undergraduate and alumni leaders were in attendance. The program focused on Kappa Sigma's four core values of fellowship, leadership, scholarship and service.

The Lambda-Phi Chapter received the "Scholarship Award: Above All Fraternity Fall 99." The award was presented to the chapter at the closing banquet of the conference.

Kappa Sigma Fraternity is the fourth largest college fraternity with chapters on 207 college and university campuses throughout North America. Kappa Sigma has initiated over 200,000 members. The fraternity was founded at the University of Virginia in 1869.

Stowe Book Presented To Marshall Center

"Transition economics is one of our subject matter areas" noted Dean Guertner. "Captain Stowe's research will be of interest to a number of our faculty and staff. The Marshall Center is pleased to receive his book."

Stowe became the first American to earn a Ph.D from the University of Warsaw School of Management in 1998 and his dissertation was published by Edwin Mellen Press in 1999.

At Sam Houston State University, Stowe serves as director of the Office of International Programs and teaches courses in law, including international business law, and entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration. He earned his bachelors from Vanderbilt University; Masters of Business Administration from University of Dallas; Doctorate of Jurisprudence from University of Houston, and his Ph.D from University of Warsaw, Poland. He has been teaching at Sam Houston since 1982.

Campus Radio Announces Programming

Faculty adviser Craig Stark said daily programming runs from 6 a.m. until midnight, and longer on weekends.

Program titles include Classics, a Concert Hour, Dialogue, Jazz in the Afternoon, Acoustic Cafe, Modern Rock, Monday Madness, Deutsche Welle Festival Concert Series, U. N. Radio, Celebration, The Download--MP3.com Radio, Cinema Classics, Night on the Town, The Essential Mix, Sabado Latino, Rock N Roots, Beale Street Caravan, The Blues Session, After Hours North, Folk and Acoustic, Folk Stage, Classic Rock, Rewind and Roll Wit It.

Classes As Scheduled Monday

Holidays for faculty, staff and students for the 2000-01 academic year will be Nov. 23 and 24 (Thanksgiving), Dec. 25-Jan. 2 (Christmas/New Year's), Jan. 15 (Martin Luther King Jr. birthday), March 15-16 (Spring Break), May 28 (Memorial Day), and July 4 (Independence Day).

Spring break for students and faculty will be March 12-16.
