Twenty Teams Expected
For Academic Challenge

Twenty high schools from throughout Texas, including Huntsville, are expected to compete in the Texas Academic Challenge State Championship Friday and Saturday (April 7 and 8) at Sam Houston State University.

Matches are scheduled for the Lowman Student Center, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Friday and 8:15 a.m. Saturday, and are open to spectators. There is no admission fee.

In each individual match, teams of four students from two high schools compete by answering questions in a "College Bowl" style contest, with winners advancing to the next round.

The Huntsville team competes Friday at 10:15 a.m. in room 308, 2 p.m. in 306, 3:20 p.m. in 303 and 4:40 p.m. in 308. On Saturday Huntsville High's matches are at 8:15 a.m. in 306, 9:35 a.m. in 304, and 10:55 in 303. Seeded play based on the record of teams in their first matches begins at 1:15 p.m. Saturday with the final match scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

In addition to Huntsville, schools which have entered are Westfield, Clear Lake, Jasper, Klein Forest, Denison, Elkins, Klein, St. John's, Temple, Dulles, Bellaire, Jesse Jones, Cistercian, Ysleta, Edinburg North, Lamar, Plano East and Memorial. One slot remained open Tuesday afternoon.

The winning school will receive a trophy and the right to represent Texas at the Panasonic National Academic Challenge at Disney World in Florida in June. Coca Cola is a co-sponsor of the event at SHSU. Tracy Steele, assistant professor of history, is the contest coordinator.
