Alumni Service Awards

J. A. "Jack" Chandler

He graduated from Sam Houston Teachers College (SHSTC) in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and earned a master's degree in 1948. He completed graduate work at the University of Houston and Texas A & M University. Early in his career, he served as a vocational agriculture teacher for public schools in Alba, Aldine, Buffalo and Mexia, with a brief stint in the U. S. Army Air Corps.

In 1955, after working in the Texas Rice Industry, he returned to his alma mater as a professor. From 1975 to 1981, he served as the dean of the College of Applied Arts and Sciences. At the time of his retirement in 1982 with 40 years of service, he had been an assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for approximately two years.

Throughout his tenure, Chandler made many significant contributions to the SHSU agribusiness program and devoted his talents to its development. He helped establish the university's chapter of Delta Tau Alpha, the national agriculture honor society.

Known for his dedication to the university and its students, Chandler was instrumental in securing a scholarship endowment from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which totals nearly one-half million dollars today. Also, contacts he developed over the years continue to provide access to businesses and organizations that are beneficial to current faculty, students, and alumni.

His wife, Ruth, graduated from SHSTC as did their son, King, daughter Judy Cole, and two grandsons. In fact, all members of Chandler's family are loyal Bearkat fans.

Chandler has been an active public servant through involvement and leadership in the Huntsville Kiwanis Club and the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce. He worked with others to revitalize the Walker County Fair and continues to contribute to Walker County's youth by donating prizes and a Beefmaster heifer for the calf scramble each year.

In addition to his devotion to his family and SHSU, he is an active member of the Huntsville Church of Christ where he renders faithful and qualitative service.

Carolyn Gaines

Through the gift of service, she has distinguished herself as a valuable volunteer. She has given her time, energy, and talents to organizing special projects for the First Baptist Church and lending a hand with Alumni Association events, especially Homecoming. To ensure that essential services for Huntsville residents continue to grow and thrive, she has served as a board member for the United Way, American Cancer Society, Red Cross, March of Dimes, City of Huntsville Library, Huntsville Bach Choir, and the Grandpersons Center.

Also, she has provided leadership for numerous community activities including the General Sam Houston Folk Festival and annual Chamber of Commerce events. As a former Rotarian, Carolyn has helped plan and carry out a variety of humanitarian and educational service projects that touched the lives of her neighbors and others in the world community.

Gaines is the daughter of Lewis and Ila Gaines of Huntsville.

Jim Kuboviak

Also, he has published numerous articles, books, and instructional videos on the subject of mobile videotaping. Additionally, he has provided nationwide police instruction in mobile videotaping for law enforcement departments and criminal justice academies.

Since 1985, Kuboviak has served as the county attorney for Brazos County. He began his career in law enforcement in 1969 as an officer with the SHSU Police Department.

Kuboviak graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Criminal Justice in 1972. He earned two master's degrees from the University of Mississippi, and doctorates from St. Mary's University School of Law and Texas A & M University.

As an alumnus, he has demonstrated a continued interest in SHSU and has provided immeasurable service and internships to students preparing for careers in criminal justice. He was a charter member of the College of Criminal Justice's alumni association and served on the board of directors for many years. In 1996, he received the Defensor Pacem Award, and in 1997, he was recognized as an "Outstanding Alumnus" of the SHSU College of Criminal Justice.

Currently, he participates in the Bryan-College Station Optimist Club, serves as a board member of the Brazos Valley Rape Crisis Center and the American Heart Association, is affiliated with many professional associations, and is the president of the Brandon Heights Homeowners' Association in College Station.

He and his wife, Rhonda, have three sons, Chad, age 17; Clay, age 13; and Craig, age nine.

Charles Mallery

A descendent of one of Walker County's pioneer families, Mallery grew up in Huntsville and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1955. After high school, he enrolled at Sam Houston State and graduated in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. While a college student, he worked with university officials to establish the Greek system here during the late '50s.

Committed to his fraternity and fellow Delts, Mallery has given freely of his resources to ensure Delta Tau Delta's future. In addition to mentoring other Delts, he has been instrumental in raising more than $100,000 to create a scholarship fund that will permanently provide assistance to worthy fraternity members.

Earlier this year, he was inducted into the fraternity's Distinguished Service Chapter, one of only 15 members in Texas to be honored since 1858 with this award. In 1999, he was named an "Outstanding Chapter Advisor" for the Western Plains Division, comprised of 24 universities extending from Canada to Mexico.

Associated with the petroleum industry for over 40 years, Mallery started his own management consultant firm in 1993 after ending a 31-year career with Exxon. At the present, he is a partner in WTL Consultants of Houston, affiliated with petroleum marketing associations in nine states, and is recognized as a merger/acquisition specialist.

Having relocated many times during his career, Mallery has always made time to serve his church, the local Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, and United Way organizations in the cities in which he lived.

Currently, Mallery and his wife, Ann, reside in The Woodlands. She is a SHSU alumna and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in English. They have three grown children, daughter Dyan, and sons Marc and Penn.

Bill E. Mills

An active alumnus, Mills was a member of the Alumni Association Advisory Board from 1976 to 1993 and served with great enthusiasm and tireless dedication.

He is a member of the Caballeros and a charter member of the Sigma Chi fraternity chapter at SHSU. In 1999, Mills was inducted into Sigma Chi's Order of Constantine, the highest award given for long and distinguished service. He thus becomes the first alumnus to be honored with the highest award for service by both his university alumni and his fraternity alumni.

Mills served as president of both the Huntsville and Houston alumni chapters of Sigma Chi and received the "Best Alumni Chapter Officer" award and the Grand Consul's Citation for Meritorious Service. Also, he acted as editor of the "Exchange," an award-winning newsletter of the Houston Sigma Chi alumni chapter.

In 1974, Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe recognized Mills for his work on "Operation: Peace of Mind," a state program developed to locate and assist runaway youths.

An avid outdoorsman, Mills is an award-winning writer and a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association. Currently, he writes the syndicated "Off the Road" outdoor column. In the past several years, he has won numerous "Excellence in Craft" awards for his outdoor writing, photography, and wildlife illustrations. As an acclaimed wildlife illustrator, he has created and marketed several series of fish and wildlife greeting cards called "Friends."

Mills resides in Houston with his wife, Judy, who holds a bachelor's and master's degree from SHSU. They have two grown children, daughter Melanie who also attended the university, and son Bryant.

Micah Slaughter

Since that time, Slaughter has worked tirelessly to build his business and has employed numerous university students, allowing them the flexibility to work around class schedules and receive on-the-job training. Moreover, he has sought to provide young employees with attributes necessary to be successful members of the future workforce and productive citizens. Additionally, he has established scholarships for eligible students through the College of Business Administration. He also supports student athletes as a member of the Bearkat Club.

Without expectation or reward, he has worked to better the community's schools by serving on several Huntsville Independent School District committees. He has mentored students at Samuel Houston Elementary to help them handle problems in school and in life and to build their self-esteem.

Volunteerism is an extension of Slaughter's faith. He is highly committed to the Unified Christian Men's group, the Gideons, and Family Faith Church. He has served as president, vice president, and board member for the local YMCA. For many years, he has helped to feed Huntsville's needy families by supplying turkeys at Christmas.
