British Historian To Present
New Warfare Perspectives

The author of over two dozen critically acclaimed books on British history and military history with a particular emphasis on early-modern and modern European warfare will make three presentations this week at Sam Houston State University.

Jeremy Black of the University of Essex, Great Britain, will deliver lectures at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 15) and 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 16). Admission to each is free and open to SHSU students, staff, faculty and the general public.

"Professor Black's recent work has provoked considerable commentary as he has called for a reassessment of military history by challenging the focus on technology and military innovation," said Robert B. Bruce, assistant professor of military history.

"He argues for a broader and more culturally driven interpretation of the impact of war in world history and the role of warfare in the expansion and rise to prominence of the great European powers and the United States."

Black's work focuses on a re-evaluation of why the Western nations became so aggressive and driven to seek greater power and influence in the world by examining all of the facets of Western culture that contributed to this global event, said Bruce.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m. Black will deliver a lecture entitled "War, Technology and the Rise of the West Reconsidered 1450-2000" in the Smith-Hutson Building Mafrige Auditorium.

On Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Black will be give a lecture titled "Could Britain Have Won? The American Revolution Reconsidered." It will be followed by a lecture at 2 p.m. entitled "The Expansion of Europe, 1500-1800." Both will be given in the Department of History on the 3rd Floor of the Estill Building.
