Delaney Named Dean of Students
At Ohio Wesleyan University

John M. Delaney, associate vice president for student services and dean of student life at Sam Houston State University, has been appointed dean of students at Ohio Wesleyan University, effective Aug. 7.

Delaney came to Sam Houston State University in 1994 as the associate dean of student life, and was named to his present position in 1996. The departments which Delaney coordinates include the Office of Student Life, Students' Legal and Mediation Services, Lowman Student Center, Student Activities, and Recreational Sports.

James Gibson, students' legal advisor in the Office of Students' Legal and Mediation Services, will serve as interim associate vice president and dean of student life effective July 31.

While at Sam Houston State University, Delaney received the Division of Student Services Outstanding Employee Award in 1996. He was appointed to numerous university committees, and was very involved with university-wide recruitment and retention efforts.

Within the community, he was selected to participate in the Huntsville Leadership Institute, volunteered with Fair On The Square activities, was a board member of the Montgomery/Walker County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and a member of the Huntsville Community Task force on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

Delaney earned the associate of arts degree from Brevard College in North Carolina, the bachelor of arts degree in English from Rice University, and master's and doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University. Prior to coming to SHSU, Delaney served as assistant dean of students and adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and as a residence hall director at Brevard College.

Delaney has presented numerous workshops at state, regional, and national conferences. He is an active member of a number of professional associations including National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Southern Association for College Student Affairs, National Orientation Directors Association, and the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, and has served on a number of committees within these associations.

Ohio Wesleyan University is a Methodist-affiliated, residential liberal arts college of 1,850 students located in the town of Delaware, about 20 miles north of Columbus, Ohio. The dean of students coordinates the work of the following departments: Residence Life, Student Activities and the Campus Center, Judicial Affairs, Greek Affairs, Women's Resource Center, Counseling Services, Career Services, Minority Student Affairs, New Student Orientation, Public Safety, and the Student Health Center.

Delaney and his wife, Marina, have two sons--Conor, 8, and Brian, 6.
