Eglsaer Named
Permanent Chair

richard eglsaer After 25 years of service, Jerry Bruce decided last summer to step down as chairman of Sam Houston State University's Department of Psychology and Philosophy, which had grown to 600 undergraduate majors, 45 masters students and 18 doctoral students. Replacing him as acting chair was Richard Eglsaer.

Now, just five months into his "acting" tenure, in a move called "highly unusual" by Kenneth Craycraft, dean of the College of Education and Applied Science, Eglsaer has been named chair, effective at the beginning of the 2000-2001 fall semester.

Craycraft explained that when the department's tenured professors gathered in December for a scheduled comprehensive three-year review of the chair position, they recommended unanimously that Eglsaer be offered a three-year appointment. Craycraft forwarded the recommendation, and Eglsaer accepted the position.

"He had extremely strong faculty and staff support, which is a tribute to his administrative talents," said Craycraft.

Eglsaer came to Sam Houston State University in 1983, and since that time, he has coordinated the school psychology training program. In addition to teaching in the Department of Psychology and serving as acting director for four months, Eglsaer has been director of the university honors program since 1993. Although he will step down as director of the honors program at the beginning of the fall semester, he will complete his appointment as chair of the Great Plains Honors Council.

Prior to coming to SHSU, Eglsaer worked as a middle school language arts teacher in San Antonio. He earned his bachelor's (1971) and master's (1974) degrees from St. Mary's University in San Antonio and his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin (1979).

After earning his doctorate he worked for the Austin school district as a researcher and subsequently as the assistant principal and psychologist for the Austin Independent School District's alternative high school.

Since coming to Sam Houston State University, Eglsaer has been active on campus. In the 1991-'92 academic year he chaired the university's faculty senate. He is currently on the athletic council and has served as executive chair of the library committee for the recently completed Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation process.

He serves or has served on committees or subcommittees on admissions, retention, student profile, institutional image, handicapped students, Orange Key selection and as a general studies adviser. He has also served as a psychological consultant to a number of local school districts. He has had more than 25 professional publications and presentations.
