Carl Harris Named Interim Dean

When Carl Harris decided to return to the classroom in 1993, after serving 13 years as the dean of the College of Education and Applied Science at Sam Houston State University, the thought never crossed his mind that he would return to the administrator's position. But that is exactly what he will be doing on June 15 when he assumes the role of interim dean for the college.

He will temporarily fill the spot vacated by Kenneth Craycraft who has been named vice chancellor for academic affairs for The Texas State University System in Austin.

"Dr. Harris is a well known and respected academician and administrator at Sam Houston State University and brings great strength and stability to the college while we conduct a national search for a permanent dean. I greatly appreciate his willingness to give to the university in yet another capacity in his distinguished career of service," said David Payne, vice president for academic affairs.

Harris came to Sam Houston State University in 1970. He served as chair of the education department and professor of education from 1973 to 1980, when he was named dean of the College of Education and Applied Science.

He is a member of several professional education organizations and has traveled internationally as a participant in education seminars and study missions.

He is the author or co-author of numerous publications, and has reviewed and critiqued education textbook manuscripts for publishing companies. His most recent presentations have dealt with classroom discipline. A former school district superintendent, principal, and teacher, Harris has also made many presentations on the preparation and education of teachers and on classroom management.

In recent years, Harris has taught social studies methods and classes in tests and measurement within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Before that, he taught personnel administration and methods of research courses.

He has served as president, vice-president, and secretary of the Kiwanis organization, and has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber of Commerce. He has served as PTA president, Boy Scout troop sponsor, and has participated in several United Fund Drives.

The College of Education and Applied Science is comprised of the departments of agricultural sciences; curriculum and instruction; educational leadership and counseling; family and consumer sciences; health and kinesiology; language, literacy and special populations; library science; psychology and philosophy; and technology. There are 160 full time and part time faculty members within the college.
