Student Wins On Astros Homers
Kim Hubenak, junior environmental science major at Sam Houston State University, and an employee of the Admissions/Visitor's Center, quickly became $1,500 richer July 26.
Not only did she not know it, but she was not really sure how it happened.
Hubenak was announced as the Houston Astros Sonic Grand Slam Inning contestant as the Astros began the 6th inning in Cincinnati down 2-0 to the Reds. The jackpot stood at $1,300.
When the first Astro hitter, Julio Lugo, connected, Hubenak had the $1,300. That sent the jackpot back to $100. Then Jeff Bagwell and Moises Alou also homered, adding another $200 to the pot.
When contacted at work and told she had won, Hubenak was surprised.
"My parents watch the games all the time," she said. "My mom must have done that."
The 3-2 score held up for the Astros win.
