Business professionals seeking to further their education may benefit from a new Saturday master's program to be offered through Sam Houston State University.
Beginning in the fall, the university will offer a 36-hour Master of Business Administration program, designed specifically for people who already are out in the work force. The classes will be offered only on Saturdays to accommodate those people who work full time and cannot meet the demands of weekday evening classes.
"It will be a traditional MBA program - really the same program as we are providing on a Monday through Thursday evening basis," explained Dean Lewis, SHSU's Dean of the College of Business Administration. "We established this program to accommodate people who simply aren't available on a weekday basis.
"The schedule will allow students to come on Saturdays only and graduate within two years, provided that they have an undergraduate business degree."
Lewis said there have been requests for such a program.
"We believe there are a lot of candidates that just can't commit during the week," he said, adding that most of SHSU's business graduate students - an estimated 70 percent - are already working full time in career-track positions. "This program is targeted to professionals who could come on the weekend."
Unlike SHSU's other MBA programs which are offered both at the Huntsville campus and through the University Center in The Woodlands, the new Saturday MBA program only will be offered in Huntsville.
Lewis anticipates that most of the interest in the class will not be from people living in Huntsville, but rather, people from the Houston-area.
There initially will be two class periods offered, with students offered the opportunity to take up to six hours each Saturday - one class in the morning and one class in the afternoon.
Lewis said besides the regular cost of SHSU fees and tuition, students enrolled in the Saturday MBA program will be required to pay an additional $100 per credit hour to be used in a faculty development fund.
