Thomas W. Satre
1940-2000
Thomas W. Satre, who designed and wrote the proposal for a major in philosophy at Sam Houston State University, and was serving as program coordinator when he retired for health reasons in 1998, died early Friday at his home in Richmond Hill, Ga. He was 59.Satre was born in Duluth, Minn., and grew up in Sisseton, S. D. He received a bachelor's degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S. D., and a Ph. D. in philosophy from Claremont College in Irvine, Cal.
He taught at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., from 1967-72, then at Sam Houston State University. He married Katherine Bennett in the spring of 1997, and upon retirement from Sam Houston State in 1997, the couple moved to Savannah where he taught briefly at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Throughout his life he pursued many activities and interests, including the Boy Scouts of America, photography, and a wide range of personal and academic interests.
His areas of specialization and research included mathematical logic and modal logic, philosophical logic and philosophy of language, philosophy of religion and philosophy of law and punishment.
Satre was active in university committee work, including Faculty Research, Curriculum, Institutional Purpose, Strategic Planning, Mission Study, Faculty Development Leave, Institutional Self-Study, Temporary Appointments, Faculty Research and the Student Organizations Board and was a member of the Faculty Council.
His memberships included the American Philosophical Association, Central Division; Society for Christian Philosophers; Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy and Psychology; and the Southwestern Philosophical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Bennett Satre of Richmond Hill; a sister, Christine Quenroe of Boulder, Co.; a daughter, Kristin Marianne Satre of Ft. Worth; a son, Brian Eric Satre of Chicago, and one grandson, Owen Thilman Satre of Chicago.
Visitation will be Tuesday (June 6) from 6-8 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Wednesday (June 7) at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah.
The family requests that remembrances be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, or the Memorial endowment Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah.
