Library Gets ScienceDirect;
Workshops Scheduled

The Gresham Library at Sam Houston State University has announced acquisition of ScienceDirect, a Web database for scientific, technical and medical research.

Ann Holder, acting director of the library, called ScienceDirect "the most comprehensive database of primary literature in the sciences available today."

ScienceDirect contains the full text of more than 1,100 Elsevier Science journals in the life, physical, medical, technical and social sciences available through the Internet. It also contains abstracts from other core journals in the major scientific disciplines.

A series of workshops on use of the new database will be conducted from 2-3 p.m. March 21-24 and March 27 and 28 in the Multimedia Lab, Room 200, of the library. Because space is limited, those who wish to participate are asked to contact Bronwyn Stewart at Ext. 3587 or Lynn McMain at Ext. 3734 or 1613 to reserve a workstation.

Journals in ScienceDirect are arranged under convenient subject areas for topical navigation, providing users with browsable subject access to the article collection. Some of the subject areas included are: Business, Economics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Education, Psychology and Sociology.

In addition to the full text journal articles, the abstract database offers ScienceDirect users a powerful search tool, providing comparisons of search results with the leading literature in the field. If the full text of the article is not available in ScienceDirect, a link to commercial document delivery services is provided.

Based on Lexis-Nexis technology, the user interface and search engine of ScienceDirect offers these features:

  • Browse tables of contents, search lists, current and back issues of specific journals;
  • Search the full text of journals using basic or advanced search features;
  • Save searches to periodically recall a search for updated information;
  • Set up a Personal Journal List;
  • View articles in SummaryPlus, with hyperlinks to references, thumbnail images and tables;
  • Link to and search within commercial bibliographic databases such as EMBASE, Compendex, Geobase, FLUIDEX, World Textiles and others; and,
  • Download articles quickly to your computer's hard drive in PDF format.

"This is an important new service and we look forward to introducing it to the faculty and students of Sam Houston State University," said Holder.
