Dallas Surgeon
James Leonard Sweatt III, center, a Dallas thoracic and cardiovascular
surgeon, was sworn in Wednesday (Nov. 1) as a member of the Texas State
University System Board of Regents, governing body for Sam Houston State
University. Nancy Neal, who chairs the regents, administered the oath
while Sweatt's wife, Mary Lois, looked on. An undergraduate of
Middlebury College in Vermont, Sweatt is actively involved in health
care, was the first black to head the Dallas County Medical Society
since its organization in 1876, and was the first black to graduate from
Washington University's medical school in St. Louis. In 1996 he was
presented Middlebury College's Alumni Achievement Award. |
