'Welcome Week'
Is Three Weeks Long


Welcome Week 2000 is well under way, and more than a week long, with events scheduled through Sept. 9.

Thursday (Aug. 24) events include Movie Night! at the Wesley Foundation at 7 p.m.; Thursday Night Live at 7:07 p.m. at the Chi Alpha house, with a live band; a Big Fish Hangout at 8 p.m. at the Catholic Student Center; and a Classy Gentlemen Party beginning at 10 p.m. at the Walker County Fairgrounds.

Friday (Aug. 25) events include an International Student dinner at 5 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom; Birthday Mass from 5-6 p.m. in the Catholic Student Center; a Beach Party at 6:07 p.m. at the Chi Alpha House; and a Fall Freeze Down Comedy Show (tickets are $8 pre-sale and $10 at the door) at 7:06 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum, featuring the comedy of T. P. Heam and Levell Crawford, and a party afterwards at the Walker County Fairgrounds.

The Catholic Student Center will sponsor the first student Mass of the fall at 6 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, with free dinner social to follow.

On Monday (Aug. 28) the Black Student Alliance will sponsor Harambee from 7-9 p.m. in the Lee Drain pit, an opportunity for students to meet representatives of predominantly minority student organizations; a Decorate for Block Party is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Catholic Student Center; motivational speaker Tom Ryan will present "How to Kick Butt in College and Your Career" at 7:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom; and the Crossroads Mystery Machine, an evening of spiritual entertainment, a scavenger hunt, and refreshments, is scheduled for 9 p.m. in the Old Main Pit.

On Tuesday (Aug. 29) the Greek Organizations Fair is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall; a Greek Assembly and Info Session at 6:15 p.m. in the Smith-Hutson Auditorium; a Greek Assembly for historically African-American fraternities and sororities at 6:15 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center; another presentation by Tom Ryan on "How to Kick Butt Nutritionally: Fight the Freshman 15" at 7:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom; and Capture the Flag, sponsored by Chi Alpha, at 9:17 p.m. at the fountain.

Wednesday's (Aug. 30) schedule includes Sorority Recruitment Orientation at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater; Mascot Try-Outs at 8 p.m. in the Health/Kinesiology Center (applications are due in Student Activities by 5 p.m. Aug. 28); and a Bearkat Block Party at 9 p.m. in the White Hall Parking Lot, hosted by 150 organizations on campus, with music, games, food, giveaways and contests.

On Thursday (Aug. 31) a Kappa Cooldown sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi, with free barbecue and beverages, is set for 6 p.m. at Colony Park.

The final week of the three-week long Welcome Week begins with a Catholic Student Center Bible Study at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 5).

On Wednesday (Sept. 6) there will be a Multicultural Fair at 11 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall area and a Wine-A-Palooza field day at 6 p.m. at Colony Park, featuring the band Wine Field.

The Bearkat football season kicks off with a 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 7) with a Tailgate Party at the Bowers Stadium parking lot, with free food, drinks, giveaways and a band, and a regionally-televised game between Sam Houston State and Southeastern Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in Bowers Stadium.

On Friday (Sept. 8) and Saturday (Sept. 9) the Leadership Challenge is scheduled for the Lowman Student Center, an interactive conference for the enhancement of leadership skills. Hours are 5-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday.
