SHSU Presents Chekov's 'Uncle Vanya'

The Anton Chekov play focuses on Vanya Voynitsky (Jeremy Sutton), who stumbles upon love in the form of his beautiful young sister-in-law, Yelena (Sofia Gomez). As he struggles with this unexpected situation, his family and friends also attempt to resolve entanglements in their own lives.

"'Uncle Vanya' has created people, like us, who sabotage their dreams, who send flowers to the wrong people, and who struggle to change," said James R. Miller, who chairs the department and directs this production.

As Vanya and his family and friends struggle to resolve their problems, the pressure gives way to humor and hope.

"Chekov's gentle understanding of how we keep on moving, despite our mistakes, blends laughter and sorrow," said Miller.

Also included in the cast are Leanne Hill, Spencer Plachy, Erin Forester, Brian Wolf, Kevin Crouch, Dave Ervin and Steven Kemp.

Junior theatre major Crys McDonald is stage manager, with lighting by senior theatre major Bethany Comely and set design by faculty member Shawn Fisher and costumes by faculty member Kristina Hanssen. Penelope Hasekoester is the theatre manager.

Thibodeaux Honored by Speech Group

Both Thibodeaux and Mary Evelyn Collins represented SHSU at the annual conference in El Paso on October 10-13. Thibodeaux participated in a round-table panel entitled, "Teacher to Administrator: Gender and Multi-cultural Perspectives and Issues."

He also chaired a student research panel and served as chair of the 4-year University Committee for the association. Collins was featured presenter for a panel entitled "2001 Odyssey into Science Fiction," which analyzed rhetoric from science fiction writings and film.

Charity Campaign Wrapping Up

The SHSU State Employee Charitable Campaign coordinators include Sandy Baker, Public Communication; Gayle Bullard, Student Life; Charles Capps, School of Business; Jeanette Collins, Cashiers; and Paula Culak, University Police.

Monthly Traditional Music Event

Each gathering of the group begins with jams, includes an "open mike" session for anyone who feels ready for the big time or who might be interested in being featured at a future session. After the featured performer there are more jams from about 9 p.m. until, as the group's Website says, "you drop or get kicked out."

The Friends is a non-profit corporation organized to encourage the playing, singing, dancing and listening of traditional acoustic "folk music" from various cultures. It includes, but is not limited to, Bluegrass, Old Time, Celtic, Singer Songwriter, Cajun, Blues, Country, Cowboy, sea chanteys, gospel singing, shape note singing, contra dancing, folk dancing, poetry, and story telling.

"If it is not electric or rock it is likely to be included within the term 'folk'," said Clover Carroll, one of the group's founders.

There is no admission fee for spectators or participants.

Advisement, Spring Registration Nears

Students must be advised if they have a grade point average less than 2.5, if they do not have a grade point average, or if they have not passed the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) tests. Advisers are listed on the SHSU Website.

Mandatory advisement is a program which helps assure that students are taking the right courses and to increase retention and graduation success rates.

Students with 94 or more hours will register Nov. 5, those with 64-93 hours Nov. 6, those with 32-63 hours Nov. 7, and those with 1-31 hours Nov. 8, with all classifications registering Nov. 9.

Spring Hill in Faculty Concert

Spring Hill

In 1983 Hill gained national acclaim with the Cimarron Wind Quintet, winning first place at the Carmel, California Chamber Music Competition. She currently plays oboe and English horn with the Houston Ballet Orchestra, is a member of the chamber music group, Mosaic, and performs with the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra.

Admission to the concert is free.
