Cattle Show Team Big Winners

The two Brangus heifers exhibited received first and second places in their respective classes. The class winner returned to the ring later and was named the Grand Champion Junior Heifer of the Brangus show.

The following day, team members prepared and exhibited one Angus heifer. She placed second and was later named Reserve Champion Junior Heifer of the Black Angus show.

"We are blessed to have such good genetics in our university herd, but the team members have worked very hard every day to get these animals into show condition and have groomed them to near perfection," said Stanley Kelley, professor of agriculture and team sponsor.

The show team consists of approximately 30 students, headed by Co-Captains Tim Buhler and Josh Chollet. Six members of the team traveled to Dallas to exhibit the calves. In addition to their successes in the show ring, the team also received the prestigious Champion Herdsman and Beef Display award. To receive this award, exhibitors and exhibits are judged on cleanliness and neatness, attention to the animals, courtesy to the public and show officials, and other factors that pertain to their presentation while at the show.

According to Bobby Lane, chair of the agricultural sciences department, "The Beef Cattle Show Team is an important part of our program. Team members not only display the excellent quality of the university's purebred livestock, they are effective in recruiting new students and developing pride among our alumni. I am very proud of them and the work they do."

SHSU's "Uncle Vanya" Wins Awards

The recommendation was made following a performance of the play at the Region VI Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival at San Jacinto Central College. The committee will meet early next month to review recommendations from eight similar festivals in other parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico.

Members of the Department of Theatre recently participated in the Festival, including more than 30 SHSU theatre and musical theatre students. The students attended nine full-length productions, workshops, forums and critiques of all shows.

Individual American Theatre Festival honors went to faculty members Kristina Hanssen for costume design and Shawn Fisher for set design. Students Jeremy Sutton, Sofia Gomez, Spencer Plachy and Leanne Hill were nominated for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Award. These students will now compete with scenes and monologues at the regional competition in Fort Worth in February.

The festival is a year-round program in eight geographic regions in the United States, with participation by more than 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide. The festival honors excellence of overall production and offers student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing and design.

The ultimate goal for participating colleges or universities is to be recommended for the National Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Sam Houston State University is now participating in level two of the festival competition.

Physics Professor Participates in International Event

The meeting joined industrial, scientific, and government representatives in areas of turbomachinery, water conservation, composite materials, alternative energy, agriculture outreach information technology, intelligence systems in transportation health, and software development.

Meitzler participated in roundtable discussions on exploring research and student collaboration to support of the creation of high-tech enterprises in Mexico. Meitzler was invited to be on the program as an expert in the field of accelerator physics.

Health Educator Receives Honor

The honor recognizes Neill's service and scholastic contribution to the field of school health. She has been a member of the association since 1993. She has served the organization's Council for Food and Nutrition as vice chair and secretary and is the current chair of the council. She is also a member of the board of directors.

Neill is a member of the Research Council, Health Educator Section, and serves as nutrition adviser for the American School Health Association. She reviews manuscripts for the Journal of School Health and has presented more than 150 sessions relating to nutrition at local, state, national and international conferences.

She has also represented the association on several national committees to help improve nutrition and health for American children. Neill is an active advocate for children's health and for the recognition of health education as a profession.

Parents' Association Awards Scholarships

The students are Joel Brush, Rebecca Gates, Kerri Goodwin and Lindsay Huck. They were selected by a committee comprised of faculty members Laura Myers of criminal justice, Debra Price of education and applied science, David Taylor of business administration, Walter Bennett of arts and sciences, and Gayle Bullard of student services.

Selection was based on academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and community service while at SHSU.

The SHSU Parents' Association was founded in 1979 to provide support and improvement of quality of life for SHSU students. Membership is open to parents, guardians or any person interested in students attending the university.

Junior Recital Features Violinist

The program includes "Partita #3 in E Major" by J. S. Bach and "Sonata #1 in D Minor, opus 75" by Camille Saint-Saens.

The recital is presented by the School of Music.

Reception to Honor Gene Blair

Before he was named director of the institute, Blair was assistant director of the Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute, where he also served as Project Manager over Special Programs and the New Chief Development Program. Prior to his seven years with LEMIT, he was coordinator of the CJC Police Academy at SHSU for 12 years.
