Additional Parking on Campus
Sam Houston State University is planning to construct four new parking lots on campus next year.The Board of Regents, Texas State University System has authorized SHSU to employ Gerald B. Harris & Associates, Inc. of Huntsville to design and develop drawings and specifications for a construction bid package for the additional lots.
The lots will add approximately 500 parking spaces and will be located off Bearkat Blvd. north of the Colony Apartments, between Avenue J and I south campus, Bobby K. Marks Drive south of the Health and Kinesiology Center, and Avenue I south of White Hall.
If all goes as planned the parking spaces will be available by the beginning of the 2002 fall semester.
Study Abroad
Sam Houston State University has been authorized by the Board of Regents, Texas State University System to offer out-of-country study during summer 2002 in the People's Republic of China; London, England; and St. Petersburg, Russia. The courses will be taught by members of the SHSU history department faculty.Locations for Asian History (HIS 591) and Readings In History (HIS 475) will be in Beijing, Sian, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai. Tracy Steele, associate professor of history, is the teacher.
Tudor-Stuart England, 1485-1714 (HIS 363) and the Era of the American Revolution, 1763-1789 (HIS 468) will be taught by Rosanne Barker, associate professor of history. Classes will be held in London, with day trips to Hampton Court.
Nicholas Pappas, associate professor of history, will teach Readings in History: The Post-Soviet World: Origins and Development (HIS 475) and Problems in Political Science: The Post-Soviet World: Origins and Development (POL 481). Theses courses will be taught at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in St. Petersburg.

Criminal Justice Profs To Present Research
Criminal justice professors James Marquart and Janet Mullings will present the results of their studies on the mistreatment of children at the San Diego Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment, Jan. 21-25, 2002.The research examines childhood maltreatment and its effect on alcohol abuse, drug abuse, criminality, and HIV risk-taking behavior in adulthood.
Marquart and Mullings submitted an abstract of their study entitled "Examining the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Abuse and Neglect Among Women Prisoners," which was reviewed by a panel of professionals affiliated with the Center for Child Protection at Children's Hospital-San Diego.
They were notified last week by the Center that their research had been selected for presentation at the prestigious conference.
Public Relations Students Available To Help Businesses
Sam Houston State University students in the Public Relations Case Studies class will again be working with community and campus organizations.
