Sports Update For Jan. 23
MEN'S BASKETBALL
JEREMY BURKHALTER, 6-4 senior from Humble, has become the all-time
leading scorer for Sam Houston State University at the NCAA Division I
level (since 1987). Burkhalter has scored 1,489 points in 97 games
during the past four years. This year, he is averaging 14.0 points.
Overall in the record books, Burkhalter stands fourth in SHSU career
scoring. The top four all-time Bearkat scorers are James Lister (2,304
points in 1970 through 1973), Bruce Allen (1,995 points in 1983 through
1986), Anthony Carroll (1,495 points in 1979 through 1982), and
Burkhalter (1,489 points in 1998 through 2001).
SENECCA WALL, 6-4 senior from Fort Worth / Eastern Hills, ranks number
one in NCAA Division I men's basketball this year in steals. Wall is
averaing 4.3 steals per game.
Wall is the only player in the league to win Southland Conference men's
basketball "Player of the Week" honors twice this season. Wall ranks
third in the league in scoring (18.0 points per game), fifth in rebounds
(6.9), and ninth in assists (3.4).
For the first time in three years, Sam Houston State finds itself mired
in a three-game losing streak. The Bearkats have lost to Southwest Texas
State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Nicholls State. The SHSU men hope to
end the losing streak this weekend when they travel to Texas Hall in
Arlington to meet the Texas-Arlington Mavericks at 4:15 p.m. on
Saturday.
The next home game for Sam Houston State is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan.
29, when the Bearkats play host to Stephen F. Austin State. Monday the
29th has been designated as "Tailgate Night" at Johnson Coliseum with a
tailgate party scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on the southeast outer
concourse of the building. The SHSU women also will be in action that
night, playing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 5:30 p.m.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
BRENDA ABAKWUE, 6-0 senior from Cedar Hill, is the hottest player in
Southland Conference women's basketball. Abakwue has earned back-to-back
Southland Conference women's basketball "Player of the Week" honors by
averaging 24.5 points and 16.8 rebounds in her last four outings.
Abakwue scored a career high 34 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in a
67-60 victory over McNeese State. She followed that up with 32 points in
a 85-46 win over Nicholls State. In a narrow loss to Southeastern
Louisiana, she grabbed 22 rebounds.
The 34 points is the most scored by an SHSU woman since Sirena Autman
set the school record of 38 against Grambling in 1990. Abakwue's 22
rebounds is the most by a Bearkat woman since Sam Houston State moved up
to the NCAA Division I level in 1987.
Next action for the Kat women will be Thursday, Nov. 25, when Sam
Houston State plays host to league-leading Stephen F. Austin State at 7
p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
BEARKAT LEADS NATION IN LONG JUMP
PRECIOUS MADISON, a junior on the SHSU women's track and field team from
Bryan, leads the NCAA Division I indoor long jump with her first place
leap of 20 feet, two and one half inches as the Bearkats' first indoor
meet of the season Jan. 5.
Madison smashed a five year old Sam Houston State school record with her
leap. The mark is the best by any NCAA Division I athlete in the women's
long jump during the first two weeks of the indoor track season this
year.
Madison also set a school record in the meet in Houston with a time of
7.57 seconds in the 60 meter dash.
Next action for both the men's and women's track and field teams is the
University of Houston Invitational this weekend in Houston.
SPRING SPORTS
Spring sports action begins in just two weeks. The Bearkat baseball and
women's tennis teams both open their seasons on Friday, Feb. 2. The
baseball team will play at Tulane that day while the Bearkat netters
face Texas-Pan American in San Marcos. The softball team begins its
schedule Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Texas A&M. The women's golf team plays its
first spring semester tournament Feb. 4-6 at Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The men's golf team opens its spring schedule Feb. 12-13 at Biloxi,
Mississippi.
