Dance Students Present 'Senior Studio'

The event includes what dance faculty member Ruben Ornelas calls "evocative" choreography, including Jennifer Cruz's "Enticement," Heather Lee's "Prime," Jessica Clark's "Karma," Amy Basset's "Points," Shara Armstrong's "Responda," and Melissa Pruett's "Fear."

Cruz's "Enticement" is a story about a romantic interlude between two characters that are brought together by chance. Lee's "Prime" is a dance filled with sinuous animal-like movement. Clark's, "Karma" incorporates martial arts and modern dance vocabulary. Basset's, "Points" is an abstract work based on geometric forms. Armstrong's, "Responda" is a dance filled with idiosyncratic movement. Pruett's, "Fear" is a modern jazz work.

Performances are at 8 p.m. in the Dance Theater of Academic Building 3. Tickets are $3 and go on sale at 7:30 p.m. each evening. For more information call the SHSU dance program at 936.294.1875.

Famous Lovers Needed

The chapter is sponsoring a Valentine's Ball, with the theme "Frozen In Time," from 6-10 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Walker Education Center. Guests are encouraged to dress as famous lovers, or in formal attire.

Jessica Kunkel, a member of the chapter, said the dance is being held to recruit members, most of whom now are history majors, but that anyone who has any interest in history is welcome to join and to participate in the ball.

Tickets are $5 per person, $8 per couple, in advance; $10 per person at the door. For directions, tickets, and more information, e-mail Kunkel.

'A Conversation With Beverly Sills'

Sills will speak at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium. Guests will have an opportunity to get Ms. Sills' autograph on a book or compact disc beginning at 7:30 p.m. the topic of her speech is "A Conversation with Beverly Sills."

"Sills brings warmth, intelligence and humor to the lectern, and she has earned the distinction of being one of the world's favorite speakers," according to her speaker management company.

"She traces her course from Brooklyn, New York to her present worldwide prominence with delightful personal anecdotes. She relates her disappointments as well as her successes, and she shares the secrets of an inner strength which enabled her to cope with some of life's harshest blows."

Sam Houston State University's Distinguished Lecturer Series was established in 1980. Speakers have included Ashley Montague, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., Zbigniew Brzezinski, John Kenneth Galbraith, Alvin Toffler, Richard Leakey, George Gallup, Jr., Larry McMurtry, David Halberstam, Lech Walesa, former president George Bush, and others.
