Sports Update For Feb. 11
MEN'S BASKETBALL
McNeese State plays host to Sam Houston State Monday night in a game
matching the number one and number two teams in the 2001 Southland
Conference race. Jumping off to a 5-1 SLC start this year, the defending
Southland Conference champions were in first place on Jan. 13. But a
four game losing streak dropped the Bearkats to fifth place.
Improved shooting from the field and eliminating turnovers have been two
key factors in getting the Sam Houston State men back on the winning
track as the Bearkats won their fourth straight Thursday night over
Lamar to leap back into second place.
The Bearkats have shot 50 per cent or better from the floor in three of
their last four. The Kats have averaged only 13.4 turnovers in their
last four games - all victories. In the previous four contests - all
losses - the Kats hit 40.9 per cent from the floor and committed 21
turnovers per contest.
Sam Houston State's four losses had come at the hands of Southwest
Texas, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholl State, and Texas-Arlington and
represented the longest SHSU conference losing streak since 1995.
Sam Houston won the 2000 Southland Conference championship with a 15-3
regular season record. The Bearkats' 22-7 record last year was SHSU's
first above .500 season at the NCAA Division I level.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
A career high night by Stacy Allen and excellent free throw shooting by
all of the Kats powered the Sam Hosuton State women to a 71-66 upset of
Lamar and ended a six-game losing streak for the Kat women last
Saturday.
Allen scored 31 points, including nine consecutive free throws in the
final minute and a half. SHSU was 22 of 30 from the line in the victory.
The win kept Sam Houston State's playoff hopes alive despite a season
that has been marred by injuries. The Kats' goal is to finish as one of
the top eight teams in the final regular season standings and thus earn
a berth in the Century Tel Southland Conference Post-Season Classic. The
SHSU women have qualified for the SLC post season tournament each of the
last eight years.
BASEBALL
Twice this weekend, Sam Houston State had the University of Texas on the
ropes but the Longhorns managed to escape with one run victories. Texas
defeated Sam Houston State 4-3 in nine innings on Friday. The Longhorns
won 5-4 in 15 innings on Saturday. Texas won 8-3 Sunday.
The Bearkats are 0-7 this season against a schedule that also has
included losses to top 25 teams Tulane and Rice.
Sam Houston State is scheduled to open its home schedule this week with
Texas Christian University at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Holleman Field.
SOFTBALL
Led by centerfielder Ashlye Hylton, who went 8 for 18 with two doubles,
a home run, and six RBIs to hit .444 for the first week of the season,
the Bearkat softball season opened its 2001 schedule with four victories
in seven games.
Sam Houston State placed second in the McKenzie's BBQ Valentines Classic
softball tournament, defeating Texas Southern 7-0 and 4-0 and the
University of Buffalo (NY) 2-1 and 9-8. The University of Illinois won
the Classic title, going undefeated in six games in the event. Illinois
defeated SHSU 4-0 and 9-2.
The Bearkats opened the season Thursday, Feb. 6, with a 7-4 loss at
Texas A&M. Other top hitters for the Bearkats are Lindsay Kaltwasser
(.421), Teri Thomas (.412), and Natalie Pruitt (.400). Picking up
pitching victories over the weekend were Christin Thompson, Kim Dixon,
Aydrien Guajardo, and Mary Martha Bogdanov.
Next action for the softball team will be a 1 p.m. doubleheader with
East Tennessee State at the Bearkat Softball Complex Thursday.
TRACK AND FIELD
Four Sam Houston State women took first places in their events as the
Bearkats set three school records in the University of Houston /
Runsport All-Comers Indoor Meet in Houston Saturday. The event is the
final regular season meet of the indoor season before the Southland
Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Precious Madison won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10.5 inches
and broke her own school record with a time of 7.53 seconds to finish as
the runner-up in the 60 meter dash.
Other event winners were Chenequa Parham in the triple jump (39 feet,
five inches), Sharond Haynes in the shot put (44 feet, 2.75 inches), and
Carol Dyer in the 800 meters (2 minutes 17.35 seconds).
Freshman Adrian Ray set a school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a
time of 8.21 then ran the third leg of the Bearkat men's mile relay to
set another school mark with a time of 3:19.80. Other members of the
relay were Brad Buegeler, Chris Stewart, and Brandon Bowling.
The Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships will be
held at the University of Houston's indoor complex this Friday and
Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17.
TENNIS
North Texas came from a set down in three singles matches to win as the
Eagles defeated Sam Houston State 5-2 in the Bearkats' first home
women's tennis match of the 2001 season Friday afternoon. The loss drops
Sam Houston State to 1-2 for the year. The Bearkats travel to Houston to
play Rice Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
