Museum Has Busy Spring Schedule

Wrapping up its more than a month long stay on April 4 will be the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition "These Rare Lands--Images of America's National Parks." The exhibit is in the Walker Education Center Gallery, and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Mondays.

On Saturday (March 24) a variety of traditional acoustic music from many cultures, produced by Sam Houston's Friends of Traditional Music, is scheduled from 4-10 p.m. in the Walker Education Center Exhibit Hall.

On April 11 Jim Olson will discuss his new book, "A Line in the Sand: The Alamo in Blood & Memory," at 7 p.m. in the Walker Education Center atrium. Olson will also autograph copies of the book, which will be on sale.

Also on April 11, an exhibit leading up to the museum's premiere yearly event, the General Sam Houston Folk Festival, will open in the exhibit hall. It is entitled "Snapshots: Photos from the Sam Houston Folk Festival."

Then on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28, the festival itself will take place throughout the museum grounds, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days.

Another program of traditional acoustic folk music will complete the spring schedule on May 26, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., in the Walker Education Center.

Pool, Softball Schedules Announced

The White Hall and Estill Hall pools open Monday (March 19).

White Hall Pool is located between the Health/Kinesiology Building and White Hall, and is equipped with a diving board, rest rooms, an arbor area and deck space for sunning.

The Estill Hall pool is located behind that residence hall and the Student Health Center. It is the smaller of the two pools with a maximum depth of five feet.

The Estill Hall pool also has rest rooms and deck space for sunning and is convenient for those living in that area of the campus.

The White Hall pool is open Monday through Thursday from 1-7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 1-6 p.m. The Estill Hall pool is open from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Entries are being taken for the Recreational Sports Moonlight Madness Softball Tourney to be held Friday (March 23) and Saturday (March 24) at the intramural sports fields on the Sam Houston State University campus.

The all-night softball tournament is open to all students, faculty and staff at SHSU. The $35 entry fee gets all teams t-shirts, Subway sandwiches, and balls for tournament play.

Entries close on Thursday (March 22) and teams will be notified of their first game time. For more information contact Amy Swingle at 936.294.1967.

Counseling Offers Study Skills Sessions

Information to be covered in the six-week program includes procrastination, time management, reading textbooks and taking notes, test taking strategies and stress management.

The center is putting together groups of 8-10 students who will meet weekly for 60-minute sessions. Students must call 936.294.1720 to participate.

The first sessions for each group will be held the week of March 26. The times and their first meeting days include Monday, 1:30-2:30 p.m.; Tuesday, 9:30-10:30 a.m.; Wednesday, 11 a.m. - noon; and Thursday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The "stand alone" sessions, for students with specific study skills concerns but not interested in the six-week program, are also offered. No appointment is necessary to "walk-in" and discuss areas of concern.

The "stand alone" sessions meet Mondays from 9:30-10:30 a.m., Tuesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m., Wednesdays 3-4 p.m., and Thursdays 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Sammys Seek MCs

Those interested should obtain an application from student activities in room 216 of the Wilson building.

Student activities has announced that they are looking for people with comedic ability. Script writing experience is preferred, but not necessary. Tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m. March 27 in room 213 of the Drain building.

The nomination process for the awards, which is to be completed by March 28, is also under way.

Student activities and several other Sam Houston State University departments and organizations sponsor the Sammy Awards to honor student organizations, student leaders, and advisers for their involvement in the non-classroom activities of students.
