Sports Update For March 25
STEWART WINS 100 METERS AT BAYLOR
On a cold, wet day in Waco four Sam Houston State Bearkats put
on outstanding performances in the Baylor Invitational Track and Field
Meet Saturday.
Chris Stewart won the 100 meters with a time of 10.76. Stewart also was
sixth in the long jump with a mark of 23 feet 3 inches.
Three Bearkats finished as runners-up in their specialities. Courtney
Boston was the runner-up to Stewart in the 100 meters with a time of
10.89. Roderick Allen placed second in the triple jump with a mark of
48 feet. Chris Sitka was the runner-up in the javelin with a mark of 202
feet, five inches.
T. J. Creators placed third in the javelin with a throw of 201 feet. Sam
Houston State's men's 4x100 relay place third with a time of 42.05 seconds.
Susie Jones and Holly Pitzenberger led the Bearkat women with a pair of
fourth place finishes. Jones jumped 18 feet 5 inchesin the long jump.
Pitzenberger posted a time of 18 minutes, 28.59 seconds in the 5,000
meters.
Christy Hester was fifth in high jump with a mark of five feet, two
inches. Lisa Helm was fifth in the 400 meters hurdles with a time of one
minute, 7.08 seconds.
TENNIS KNOCKS OFF SOUTHWEST TEXAS
Led by Ivette Andrade and Kim Gardiner, who won at number one and two
singles and teamed to win the number one doubles match in a tie-breaker,
Sam Houston State's women's tennis team racked up a 6-1 Southland
Conference dual match victory over Southwest Texas State Sunday at the
McAdams Tennis Center.
Other singles winners for the Bearkats were Stephanie Sutton at number
three, Diala Ammar at number four, and Jayme Holmstrom at number five.
Holmstrom and Kim Jordan teamed to win the number three doubles match as
well.
The tennis team travels to Louisiana to play Louisiana-Monroe on
Saturday and Northwestern State on Sunday.
BASEBALL GOES 1-2 AT MCNEESE
Chris Howay hurled a no-hitter as McNeese State posted a 20-0 victory
over Sam Houston State in the opener of a Southland Conference twinbill
in Lake Charles March 24. The Bearkats came back to take the second game
11-0. McNeese State's Bob Gothreaux spread out 10 hits in nine innings
as the Cowboys took the third game of the series 5-2 on Sunday.
Saturday's first game was the fourth no-hitter in McNeese history. Howay
faced 21 batters. Only Phillip Weaver with a walk in the third inning
reached first base. SHSU captured the second game in seven innings on
the 10-run run. The Bearkats had 12 hits in the game, two of them home
runs by C. J. Wright and Phillip Weaver.
Sam Houston's Carroll Kelly and Dominick Garcia accounted for the runs
for the Bearkats. Kelly brought in Phillip Weaver with a ground out to
shortstop after Weaver had reached second on an error and been balked to
third. Garcia hit an RBI double in the seventh inning.
The baseball team plays host to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Wesleyan
on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both games start at 2 p.m. at
Holleman Field. The Bearkats host Texas-San Antonio in a Southland
Conference three game series Saturday and Sunday.
SOFTBALL DROPS THREE IN LOUISIANA
Sam Houston State's softball team dropped all three games in a
tripleheader at Monroe, LA, Sunday. The Bearkats fell 9-0 in the first
game, 6-5 in the second, and 5-0 in the third game.
The victories marked the Indians' second consecutive Southland
Conference series sweep and upped their season record to 22-12. Sam
Houston State dropped to 12-17 for the season and 1-11 in Southland
action.
The Bearkats travel to Shreveport, La, to play a doubleheader with
Centenary on Wednesday, March 28. Sam Houston State plays host to
Southwest Texas State in a Southland Conference series in Huntsville on
Saturday and Sunday. Both days the action begins at 1 p.m. at the
Bearkat Softball Complex.
MEN'S GOLF HOSTS BEARKAT CLASSIC
The Sam Houston State men's golf team hosts its lone home tournament of
the spring semester Monday and Tuesday, April 2-3, at Bentwater Country
Club in Montgomery, TX. Top teams from all over the Southwest will
compete in the Bearkat Classic.
Ryan Polzin leads the Bearkats this season with a 72.7 stroke average.
Polzin was the individual medalist champion for SHSU at the Southern
Mississippi Invitational in February.
