Judy DeTrude, associate professor in educational leadership and counseling at Sam Houston State University, has been presented the Dr. Dwight L. Arnold Outstanding Alumni Award by Kent State University.

DeTrude was selected for the award, which she was presented recently at the 2001 American Counseling Association conference in San Antonio, by faculty members of the Counseling and Human Development Service Program at Kent State.

John D. West, professor and coordinator in the Kent State program, said that DeTrude was selected based on a number of professional leadership activities. She earned her master's degree in 1985 and doctorate in 1989 from Kent State.

She was appointed the first full time director of the Kent State's Counselor Training agency in 1989, working in that position until her relocation to Texas in 1991. While working on her two degrees at Kent State, she also taught in the counseling program.

West mentioned DeTrude's service to Sam Houston State University, as a member of the faculty senate and as faculty adviser for the Beta Kappa Tau Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota counseling honor society.

DeTrude also helped write a doctoral proposal for her program at Sam Houston State and wrote a self-study for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Also noted were her activities in becoming a licensed professional counselor in Texas, membership in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Texas Counseling Association, and a number of professional presentations at counseling conferences.

Her recent publications include "The Mental Health Desk Reference," "Advancing Women in Leadership," and "Women and Leadership: Creating Balance in Life."

Alcohol Awareness Day

The Counseling Center at Sam Houston State University is sponsoring the 3rd Annual Alcohol Awareness and Screening Program, Thursday, (April 5) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the atrium of the Lee Drain building.

"The purpose of the program is to educate students about alcohol problems," said Pamela W. McManus, SHSU counseling psychologist. "This is accomplished by teaching students to recognize a drinking problem, the impact alcohol abuse and binge drinking has in their lives and the lives of others, and where to go for help."

A free brief assessment of alcohol habits will be offered. A student may assess their own habits or those of someone close to them.

Free information will be available on such topics as signs of alcohol abuse, cutting back on alcohol use, and helping others with alcohol problems. Students will also have an opportunity to talk with a counselor if desired.

For more information contact McManus at 936.294.1720.

Channel 7 to Broadcast Astros

March Madness ends Monday and the National Pastime takes over, and Sam Houston State University's Cable Channel 7 will again play a big part in lives of Huntsville's Houston Astros fans.

Cox Communications has announced that 42 games will be broadcast this season on Cable Channel 7, beginning with the 4 p.m. Tuesday (April 3) season opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fox Sports Net Southwest, which is being moved to Cable Channel 12 on May 31, will begin its broadcasts of 75 games with the Astros/Brewers at 7 p.m. Wednesday (April 4).

A complete listing of all games scheduled to be broadcast on both channels is available at the Cox Communications offices at 1620 Normal Park.

Advising Under Way Through April 6

Registration for the summer session I and II and the fall semester at Sam Houston State University begins April 9, and mandatory advisement is under way through April 6.

Students with 94 hours and more will be the first to be allowed to register online. Juniors (64-93 hours) may register beginning April 10, sophomores (32-63 hours) April 11, and freshmen (1-31) April 12.

Additional advance registration for summer II and fall is May 14-July 13.

Students are required to meet with an adviser if their overall grade point average is below 2.5, if they do not have a grade point average (new and transfer students), or are not exempt from the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) test, and did not pass all three sections of the TASP test.

TASP is a state mandated test to determine if a student has the skill level necessary to perform effectively in an undergraduate degree program. The SHSU academic advisement program is designed to decrease dropout rates and improve student academic planning.

Bearkats Prepare to 'Attack'

The Rotaract student service organization at Sam Houston State University has scheduled its Bearkat Attack community service day for Saturday (April 7). All students interested in community service are invited to participate.

Bearkat Attack is an activity in which campus and community organizations come together to help the less fortunate members of the Huntsville community. Activities focus on, but are not limited to, home repair.

The majority of the people the activity has helped in the past have been elderly or disabled. Past projects have included painting, roofing, replacing floors, building wheelchair ramps, and cleaning.

The "attack" begins at 7:30 a.m. at the staging area in the parking lot of West Hill Mall. For information contact Brandon Lowery or Tiffany Frey at 936.295.3418.

Student Recitals

Student recitals, once voice and one horn, are scheduled for Sunday and Tuesday this week at Sam Houston State University.

Mezzo-soprano Andrea Gauthier will present her junior recital at 5 p.m. Sunday (April 1) in the Recital Hall at Sam Houston State University, with piano accompaniment by Natalie Wilkins. Gauthier will perform works by George Frideric Handel, Robert Schumann, Samuel Barber, Amy Beach, Clair Brook and Leonard Bernstein.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 3) Suzanne Scott will present a recital on French horn, also in the Recital Hall. She will be accompanied on piano by Jay Whatley.

Scott will perform works by Camille Saint-Saens, Richard Strauss, Otto Ketting and Paul Hindemith. Admission to both recitals is free.
