Hoover Recognized for Contributions to Policing

Larry Hoover

Hoover received the O.W. Wilson Award, presented by the Police Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) at the 2001 annual meeting held recently at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes an individual who has made substantial contributions in the field of policing and enhanced the study and understanding of the complex issues facing the delivery of police service, as well as police education, research and practice.

More specifically, Hoover was recognized "as a model demonstrating how research and academe can not only work with police agencies, but also reshape the way police agencies provide service." It was noted that police leaders across the country immediately recognize his name and actively seek his counsel on many important policy issues.

ACJS is the largest international organization that promotes scholarly and professional activities within the discipline of criminal justice. Established in 1963, the Academy provides a forum for disseminating ideas relating to critical issues in research, teaching and education within criminal justice and its applied disciplines. Approximately 1,700 members from throughout the nation and abroad attended this year's meeting.

Faculty Member to Begin Summer Travels

Sanjay Mehta

Mehta will be making presentations and attending conferences far (Australia) and near (College Station).

Mehta will conduct a one day Executive Development Seminar for the Marketing Institute of Singapore on May 22 on Marketing Information Systems. His presentation will include how to use various sources of information (e.g., census, internet, marketing research) to gain a competitive advantage in the market place.

From there he will go to Sydney, Australia for the American Marketing Association's Service Marketing Conference at Macquarie University May 27. He will present a paper entitled "Television Shopping in Singapore: An Empirical Investigation," based on data he collected last year.

From there he goes to the University of South Queensland at Toowoomba, Australia for a presentation to faculty and doctoral students at their Faculty Colloquium on June 13. The presentation is titled "Business Application of GIS."

This presentation is based on an article that was published last year in the Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship and some follow-up work he and Mark R. Leipnik, assistant professor of geography, are doing on geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) applications to truck side advertising.

From there Mehta will be going to India for a board meeting of the new online office supply procurement company for Indian companies, Officespider.com, which he helped start last year.

He will return to Huntsville In July and will attend the American Marketing Association's Faculty Consortium on Electronic Commerce at Texas A & M July 14-17.

President's Employee Scholarship Program

Forms should be submitted to the Human Resources Department, Box 2356, Frels Bldg., room 122.

The scholarship is for full-time (1.0 FTE) benefits eligible staff and faculty, through the rank of assistant professor, who want to take one class or one class with a lab (4 semester credit hours maximum).

The following selection criteria have been established:

• Applicants must have a minimum of one year full-time continuous employment at SHSU and have earned at least 3 semester hours at SHSU with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  
• Undergraduate students with a 2.5 GPA or greater will be given 1st priority.
  
• Graduate students with a 3.5 GPA or greater will be given 2nd priority.

7th Annual Golf Tournament Nears

Teams of four persons, all of whom must be members of the faculty/staff, can consist of any combination of men and women. Single entries will also be accepted and teams formed from these entries.

The $40 per person entry fee includes green fee, cart, range balls, goodie bag, soft drinks, and individual and team awards including long drive and closest to the pin.

Pottery Sale

Ceramic sculpture, pottery and tiles by students, faculty, staff and alumni will be for sale. Raffle tickets will also be sold for a special prize.

Proceeds will be divided between the participating artists and the Clay Club. The club uses its allotment to bring visiting artists to SHSU and to fund scholarship opportunities for students.

Events Set for Finals Preparation

The Sam Houston State University Parents' Association will be sponsoring "Apple Days" on May 7 and 8, and handing out free apples and scantrons to all students in the Lee Drain Mall area.

The association conducts the event to emphasize its support for students taking final exams.

The association has also scheduled its Parents' Weekend next fall for Oct. 6. A highlight will be the SHSU/Northwestern State football game at 6 p.m.

The Department of Residence Life and the Aramark food service company will sponsor a breakfast from 10 - 11:30 p.m., at which faculty and staff members serve as greeters, bussers and servers.

"The breakfast is scheduled late at night, the time when our students are most likely to be around, and hopefully in the study mode," said Mary Ellen Sims, coordinator of program development for residence life. "Late night study hall, staffed by residence hall directors, will begin at midnight, as soon as the cafeteria can be cleaned."

Continuing Education Courses

These include Beginning Yoga, Silk Flower Arranging, Introduction to Computers, Microsoft Word, The Internet, Beginning Bridge, Medication Aide Refresher and Nurse Aide Training Two Week Course.
