Sports Update for April 8

TRACK & FIELD

With three NCAA provisional qualifying times, three school records, and a host of season bests, the Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field team posted their best performance ever at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin April 5-7.

Chris Sitka, junior from Yoakum, won his second javelin championship in two weeks and the sixth of his Bearkat career. He threw the javelin 224 feet, nine inches for an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The throw also bettered Sitka's own school record of 217 feet, seven inches.

Carol Dyer, senior from Klein Oak, finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.94 seconds, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark that bettered the SHSU school record of 59.24 (set by Kim Buckner in 1999) and one of the top three times in the history of the Southland Conference.

Precious Madison, junior from Bryan, was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, seven inches for an NCAA provision qualifying mark which bettered the school record of 20 feet, 4.25 inches.

Holly Pitzenberger was the runner-up in the 10,000 meters. The true freshman from Tomball just missed breaking the school record of 38 minutes, one second as she ran a 38:15.70.

The Bearkat men's 4x100 relay placed fifth in the Texas Relays Invitational 4x100 with a time of 3:13.18. The relay team consisted of Shane Christian, Chris Stewart, Chris Foster, and Courtney Boston. The Bearkat men's 4x400 relay was 10th with a time of 3:13.18 by Brandon Bowling, Stewart, Brad Buegeler, and Adrian Ray.

BASEBALL

Sam Houston State's baseball team posted an 8-5 victory over the number one team in college baseball, Rice, on Wednesday, then took two of three games from Southland Conference leader Texas-Arlington Saturday and Sunday.

Lou Ferrell hit a two-out, three run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 9-8 come from behind victory over UTA Sunday. The Bearkats trailed 7-3 to UTA after just three innings. Cory Walters spread out five hits in a seven inning 2-0 shutout of UTA on Saturday. Freshman Zach Atkinson got the victory in the win over Rice.

The Bearkats will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Centenary on Tuesday before traveling to Southeastern Louisiana for an important Southland Conference series this weekend.

MEN'S GOLF

Led by Ryan Polzin and James Beston, the Bearkat men's golf team posted top ten team finishes in two intercollegiate golf tournaments last week. Sam Houston State placed fourth in the Bearkat Classic hosted by SHSU at Bentwater Golf Club Monday and Tuesday, April 2-3. Then the Kats placed seventh at the prestigious Border Olympics in Laredo Friday and Saturday, April 6-7. Beston was the Bearkats' top individual finisher at Bentwater, placing sixth with a two-day score of 68-69-75--213. Polzin was 10th at the Bearkat Classic with a 73-70-72--215 and 15th at the Border Olympics firing a 73-79-67--219. The Bearkats will complete their 2001 spring schedule with the annual Southland Conference championships at Saint Francisville, LA on April 16-18.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Sam Houston State wraps up Southland Conference competition this week with a pair of home matches. The Bearkats play host to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday, April 11, at 2 p.m. Then SHSU faces Southeastern Louisiana in a make-up of a rained out match on Friday, April 13, at 12 noon.

SOFTBALL

Texas-San Antonio swept Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference series in the Alamo City Saturday and Sunday to end the Bearkats' hopes for a post-season SLC tournament berth. The Bearkats fell to UTSA 3-1, 5-0, and 9-0. Senior catcher Jennifer Robertson produced SHSU's only run of the series with a solo home run in the first game. The softball team plays at the University of Houston on Wednesday, then hosts Northwestern State in a Southland Conference series Friday and Saturday.

FOOTBALL

The 13th annual Sam Houston State Bearkat Football Dinner & Auction will be held Friday, April 20, 2001 at the Walker County Fair Grounds. The annual fund raiser for Bearkat Football Scholarship Enrichment will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction. Dinner will be at 7 p.m. with the main auction to follow. Single tickets are $30. Couples are $50. Tables of eight are available for $200. The auction annually features an opportunity for Bearkat football fans to bid on sports apparel, game tickets, and memorabilia from NFL, NCAA, and NBA teams as well as golf and hunting outings and other exciting bargains. The number one item on the auction block, however, is the opportunity to be head coach of either the Orange or the White teams in the annual SHSU spring football game to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21.

ALL-SPORTS AWARDS BANQUET

The 19th annual Sam Houston State University All-Sports Banquet and Athletic Awards Presentation will be held Monday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The event features the presentation of the "Most Valuable Player" awards in each of the Bearkats' 15 intercollegiate sports as well as highlighting top athletic and academic achievements by Bearkat student-athletes during the year.
